there are still a large percentage of Switch hackers who cannot follow directions / do not have the technical ability to do so.. look at every single FAQ for every single console which has been hacked in history. That is why there is always a ''market'' for easy to use products OR someone who has the know how and time to do the work for you. Which always amuses me when people comment about not making money from open source products - there are lots of people making money from someone else's open source work.. the people charging to mod consoles.. which in turn they usually sell copies of software for the modded console as well.
As for reverse engineering not being illegal, not always true - there are plenty of patents which lock down intellectual property (whether code, medical or chemical structure) so you cannot reverse engineer them and then release you clone to the free or commercial market.
This is not untrue (that there is a market for the apathetic/uneducated), but I would challenge anyone as to the specifics here. How is using a $9 dongle bought off the internet preloaded with hekate and dragging and dropping files from kosmos any different/harder than buying a sx os dongle and dragging and dropping the .dat file? At least with atmosphere you don't have to go through the process of aquiring a license.dat file, an obvious 'extra step' that is only required with this paid service.
And while yes, at the moment sx installer (which is just DZ) is a more feature rich program, what does it accomplish that someone with atmosphere cannot? You can install .nsp game files the same with sx installer as you can with tinfoil/goldleaf. Sure, you can bring up xci loading and emunand, those are clearly extra features but do they really add more utility? In the end, if you want to pirate games it doesn't really matter how you pirate them, whether you mount the xci everytime (annoying) or install the nsp once.
And the emunand discussion will soon be a moot point as a free emunand will be here before you know it. I've watched the progress so don't think that it isn't happening, it will be here shortly enough. I do believe the emunand is a feature that gives sx os an advantage. But its literally the only true advantage, the other features are all available in one form or another and are not anymore difficult to use than sx os.
The major point here - There is nothing major that a atmosphere+hekate switch cannot do that a sx os can do, any any extra features are minimal (mostly lazy features that
may save a small amount of time and thats it). And soon enough what little differences there are will be availble for the community for free.
Im not against good ole capitalism. Those who wish to improve on others work are free to do so. Those who wish to pay for it are free to do so. That fosters innovation and growth. I also have no problem with blawar using source from products and selling his upgraded feature set to a company to use.....with the exception that he follow the licenses that exist. They exist for a reason and that reason is valid. If you save time by using others work that they freely provided to the community, then you are supposed to do the right thing by then giving back to those people/communities that provided the work that saved you time. This is how civilizations are built. If you choose to not play by these rules, there are of course legal implications, but the stronger argument is the long term consequences. How many people will hold back from releasing to the public benefical applications/exploits/source due to the malbehavior of others? The best example right now is with the ps4. There are real exploints for the latest firmware that are not being released specifically because the only utility that people are trying to bring to the ps4 is piracy. If people gave more shits and contributed instead of stealing, then these security researchers would be much more likely to release their exploits.
As for RE, yes you are not wrong of course there are going to be exceptions/exclusions, etc. But that does not make my original point incorrect. And your point also strays from the context of the this topic, which was the absurd notion that xortroll somehow stole his own work from xecuter. Lets not erect strawmen and try to muddy the conversation with false narratives eh? Distracting from the point doesn't accomplish anything.
