3DS homebrew tool FBI title manager removed from GitHub

EGlXVVq.png

After a rough week, the emulation and homebrew scene continues to suffer major losses. As of today, homebrew developer Steveice10's GitHub repository has been deleted. A known quantity in the 3DS homebrew scene, Steveice10 created important tools for the system such as a modified sysupdater, a port of GBC emulator GameYob to the 3DS, and most importantly, FBI title manager, which allows users to install .CIA format 3DS titles and homebrew.

FBI has not been updated since 2020, and was considered feature-complete, with its source code available and the project archived, but it was suddenly removed from GitHub today, along with all of his other projects. The exact reasoning behind the removal isn't known, though the timing implies it may be related to other events happening in the emulation and homebrew scene recently.

This sounds more like something he did willingly to avoid the possibility of future trouble. Also atmosphere is quite literally designed to not allow for piracy by default. To the point where SciresM refuses to include any kind of sigpatching for it by default.
Does not matter in the least. If Nintendo wants to shutdown Atmosphere they can easily do so. Developers of custom firmware, emulators, homebrew do not have the financial means to fight a giant like Nintendo, nor do they have the backbone.

When someone or something is cornered is when they are their most dangerous.

Nintendo refuses to allow people to purchase their older games/software but doesn't want people to emulate them. Additionally, I get the feeling that Steamboat Willie entering public domain has caused concerns for dear ol' Nintendo. Disney is goddamn big over there and so the idea that even John Disney itself cannot retain copyright indefinitely (at least outside of Japan) no doubt scared the shit out of them.

I suspect things will get worse before they get better. They're going to do everything in their power to take legal action and when unable to do that, they'll make the lives of everyone involved as hellish as possible.

How much worse will it get? Who knows, tbh -- but I need not remind people that Japanese game development studios (and by extension, the console manufacturers) at one point went as far as to try and ban people from simply -streaming- gameplay; going after things like twitch and youtube for it.

Additionally, the rejection of the more recent versions of HDMI to be included in Linux is concerning as well. Look at how hard it was for anyone to stream Persona 5 due to HDCP. It wouldn't surprise me if the next generation of consoles (at least the big two that are designed in Japan anyway...) go extra hard with the DRM this time to prevent it and it has something to do with that ruling.

Not to doompost or anything but this would be around the time in which I would recommend purchasing some sort of external drive with a large-ish capacity and making backups of the software you utilize that the larger console manufacturers/game devs consider to be, er... "distasteful".

And no, I don't want to hear about how it doesn't affect you because you have <x, y, z> ways around it nor do I want to hear anything from anyone who's willing to take a bullet for the multi-million to billion dollar gigacorps. I'm speaking from a historical preservation standpoint and on behalf of people who wish to see, hear, view and experience what older and unavaliable games were like.

Some of you guys and gals are jumping hard and far into conclusions here. The homebrew software FBI was willingly taken down by the creator themselves, they did this because of their involvement with Citra development. Considering the circumstances, FBI as homebrew software isn't thrown in the illegal bin, it can be forked and or rehosted, stop freaking out like it's the end of days. In fact I'll probably supply a copy later today, so see, absolutely no reason to lose your shit. Developers make decisions willingly when things like this happen, it is what it is.
So it was related to recent events in some way.

Anyways, thanks for uploading a copy. The funny thing is that it seems like everyone forgot the fork that is available called "FBI Reloaded", I've been using it for a while. That fork is still available in GitHub and has many improvements over the original version.

Hot dang! Well, I sure hope that the backlash for the community is just or more strong than this shit-movements Nintendo is taking this days.

It really felt like a big low blow. But I hope that, when things cool a bit, the community is going to slap them in the face, way harder than what they are doing.

How long did it take between when Sony started really cracking down (i.e. with going after Geohot) and when Sony's networks repeatedly got compromised?

you know, you could just follow 3ds hacks guide's finalizing setup page where it installs the homebrew launcher, fbi, and a few other apps
