Pyrite64 is a new open-source game editor and engine that makes it easier than ever to create N64 homebrew



A new open source game engine and editor aimed at Nintendo 64 homebrew hobbyists interested in making their own N64 projects has been released.

Pyrite64 is built using community tools and provides a modern interface and workflows that facilitate full 3D games capable of running on real N64 hardware.

Included in the repo is Cathode Quest 64, a demonstration project already created using Pyrite64 which showcases its tooling and rendering features.

Pyrite64 is a visual editor + runtime-engine to create 3D games that can run on a real N64 console or accurate emulators.
Besides the usual editor, some extra features include:

  • Automatic toolchain installation on Windows
  • 3D-Model import (GLTF) from blender with fast64 material support.
  • Support for HDR+Bloom rendering (shown here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP8g2ngHftY)
  • Support for big-texture rendering (256x256) (shown here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNEo0aQkGnU)
  • Runtime engine handling scene-management, rendering, collision, audio and more.
  • Global asset management with automatic memory cleanup
  • Node-Graph editor to script basic control flow

incredible. cant wait to see this evolve. been following this guy for a few years.
 
i want to see mgs1 ported using this statue level of detaiils
that one tech demo is 1.7 mb

I can't imagine how big a MGS would be at that level of fidelity

even the original was already 1 gb (across 2 discs)

I'm not sure what is the limit of an n64 rom size but if we were to improve on the PS1 title it would have to be at least 1gb
 
with all the garbage that the video game industry is doing to try to control games for their personal profit its good to see fans and real gamers making stuff that can provide pure entertainment because they arent sitting in front of board rooms being told how to manipulate the gamer to spend money or how to put barriers around the entertainment via microtransactions etc.

this is what the video game industry was supposed to be. not what greedy nintendo has helped turn it into

Go back to the videogame crash that led to the NES being marketed as a computer

we can see churning out shovelware and cheap cash grabs is a tale as old as time
 
I'm willing to bet that this is the tool people are/will be using to bring their new N64 games to ModRetro's M64. It all makes sense now. The timing of this is just spot-on.
Or the Analogue64 that doesn't come from an arms dealer.
Or the SummerCart64 which is an amazing open source flash cart that actually has developer tools built in.

there was a time in human history where for profit made sense. as we have advanced for profit is just holding back human advancement and hurting humans more than its helping.

AI will take over humans with for profit motives. and its time for people to stand up for a better society than for profit. im not saying get rid of incentivizing but for profit only should be allowed in a 100% free market where there are no patents or IP
 
Just in time for the ModRetro M64! Can't wait to see the games, developers create with this tool. Sadly, the N64 ended it's life, JUST as developers were starting to get a hang of the system. I'm hoping to see ROM files push past 64 MB or at least have developers be smart and split their games with multiple ROM files and use the controller pak to link the parts.

Games were getting better, but you started noticing the limitations. I'm playing Banjo Tooie for the moment. Rare was without a doubt the best N64 developer, maybe even better than Nintendo, and you notice BT having extreme lag in some arenas. And with the Dreamcast out and PS2 around the corner, it sadly wasn't an option to keep it around much longer.

I saw a preview of the M64 today, and it looks great. I was in doubt between the M64 and Analogue 3D, but might just go with the M64. I'll be giving these tools a good spin next week.

I am so ready for the ModRetro M64! Every day I'm like: dude, just take my money already! It feels like the next golden era of the N64 is around the corner.

Can't wait to get the opportunity to use this. I'm kind of a noob when it comes to programming but anything that makes older hardware more accessible to program for is an absolute boon in my eyes
 
The capabilities of this was insane, some of the things that were made using this that were shown in the overview made it look like a GameCube game but with a little low poly count. I am looking forward to see what can be done with this.
