So unsure how accurate my title is there so I will give a, hopefully, brief explanation as to what I mean. Back when the Switch was cracked wide open and homebrewing finally took off due to a vulnerability with the Tegra, I remember hearing about a CFW called Atmosphere. A video I watched out of curiosity mentioned something along the lines of that CFW only remaining installed until the next reboot. From my limited understanding on how OS's work I assume that to mean it's only loaded into RAM and remains in RAM until then next time it's turned off an on again.

Fast Forward to now and with Nintendo's utter stupidity when it comes to how the user makes save backups (cloud only save back ups that delete after a certain threshold of time once a lackluster online membership runs out is the most arse-backwards bollocks idea I have ever heard off especially when it also prevents select titles from utilising it despite the competition doing it bloody right. Like, HOW!? How does someone just sit there and think that's a fantastic idea instead of doing what Microsoft and Sony do in regards to Cloud Saving because it fucking makes sense! Rant done) I want to homebrew my Switch in order to backup my save files locally in case something happens and I don't have NSO for a period of time so I'm going to be using Atmosphere because of the video I watched a while back under the assumption that I can reboot my device when done and I'm back to Official Firmware.

So as I may be entirely wrong about Atmosphere, and other CFW's for that matter, how does it actually work and can I revert to Official Firmware by just turning it off and on again?

  • You cannot install a CFW currently; its more accurate to say you run/load it since it will not boot unless you use the tethered coldboot exploit, Fusee Gelee, to send a payload that allows a CFW to be initialized
  • While the CFW itself is temporary, its effects are permanent such as bogus error codes, fake tickets, and any other traces of CFW
  • The above can only be fully removed by restoring a clean NAND backup made before hacking using Hekate
  • If your question isn't regards to bans, simply turning off and on or restarting the console will load into OFW unless you install AutoRCM which causes the console to reboot into RCM whenever it is turned off

Nah my question isn't in regards to bans but that other information you gave me is all that I need. Thank you. I assume I can find more information on how to avoid bans on your thread about it??

I hate that cloud saves don't work for every game as much as the next guy, but realistically it wasn't going to be possible to have it work for every single game anyway. Think of what implications that would have for Pokemon for example, you'd be able to clone Pokemon very easily, and completely break wonder trade among other things. Verifying to make sure you aren't trying to restore an older save than what is on your console like how it works on the 3DS doesn't help much either, because in this case you can actually log into your account on a second console and download the save there, and suddenly you have two of all your Pokemon that you can trade.
Cloud saves don't work for every game in Steam either. Far from it, in fact.
And I think 6 months is more than enough time for you to either grab any saves you still care about after your membership expires, or renew at a later point. I would have been happy with a third of that. So that's a non-issue. Would have been nice if it was free, sure, but they are going to need to have storage servers dedicated to cloud saves and those aren't free so you can't really expect them to offer it for free.
I'm not sure how Microsoft and Sony do it but to my knowledge at least on XBox One all of the online services cost money. And a lot more than what Nintendo are charging.
