So I was thinking about somthing and for all you Flashcart sellers and hardmodders take a note! Ok the GameCube had Unofficial Memcards with SD slots in them, The PlayStation2 is getting ready to be 20 years old in 2 more years (I'm Old) and for some people who want to relive "childhood memories" would get one they got the wires and the controller but there disc/memory card ect is missing

This is where a PS2 memory card with a SD slot comes in handy

You would download the FMCB installer and install it on your SD card

So just an idea

It's a nice idea since it would require a lot less equipment than current methods, but from what I remeber remeber PS2 memcard slot speeds are really slow? Which is why people use the HDD expansion, and USB isn't always compatible.

And one thing the Gamecube was lacking was a USB port. The PS2 has USB ports, you can directly insert USB sticks and launch software from there (with e.g. uLaunchELF, IIRC).

Yuck.
Plebs not using HDDLoader or SMB sharing.

People, why would you want something horrendously slow when you can dump a HDD in a Phatty console and use the LAN port to stream games off off any laptop/desktop.

PS2 is wide open in terms of piracy.
Sure, USB works but HDD loading and SMB loading remain superior.
If you don't want that, modchip is the next option.

I have a phat console but I don't have a network adapter or an IDE hard drive. I guess I could buy them though.

It's a one time thing you have to pay and it's not very expensive. Just save.

SMB sharing happens over the local network.
It's maxed at 10MB/s iirc (could be a bit less in the PS2's case)
Not via the WWW.

I highly recommend it.
Well worth it.

You can search for a SATA adapter but I heard it's hit and miss.
Don't quote me on it tho.

MC transfers are so slow it'd be borderline unusable. Not doable (unless you want to wait up to minutes for a game just to show its splash screen...).

While this may be just a problem of the flash/controller included in original MagicGate PS2 MCs I think it's a bus issue, it's simply not meant for high speed transfers.

An HDD really is the best solution. (And as I have shown in the reply above, it's pretty cheap too. The price of one new game. Probably because IDE is outdated af now.) A flash drive sucks compared to an HDD but it's better than nothing (at least it works). But I agree, a memory card with an SD card slot would be the worst solution. Probably unplayable.

Phat PS2s are not really common in some regions (or at least as common as slims) which kinda kills the HDD for anything >= SCPH-70000. Personally I use a cheap Kingston USB 32GB drive whenever I want to play a quick game and whenever I want to do "serious" stuff (run Linux, develop homebrew, play games with lots of FMVs and assets) I hook it up to my router and connect to my SMB share.

Basically, your alternatives are (from best to worst):

- Phat PS2 + HDD
- SCPH-70000 PS2 + HDD kit
- SMB
- Theoretically i.Link (FireWire 400) on Phat PS2s
- USB (1.x only, so about .5MiB/s max speed)
- Theoretically data transfer over MC bus.

I didn't know there was an HDD kit for the slim PS2. Huh.

It's only available for the very first models, apparently they left the connection pads on the motherboard, just didn't expose them to an external connector.
There's homebrew solutions that involve soldering a drive directly to the mobo or you could purchase a commercial product like an HDPro which offers an interface similar to a Phat PS2 (AFAIK, never tried it myself)

To be fair. Hardly anyone outside of the modding community ever used it anyway.
