Bah. Thanks, at least it's known. It'll suck to skip, but as long as the main story and most other optional activities are safe, I'm fine.

That's my fault. Apparently, the text for the fishing battles in stored in text\t_fish._dt, and not the scena file. My tool doesn't extract that text, so it does fix the file pointers, so the game will crash duing those segments. I'll update the translation tool within a day or so.

Hey, don't mind me. I'm very grateful to anyone responsible for allowing me to check out this game sooner than later. Thank you.

Updated translation tool with fix for fishing duels. You will need to use the new text\t_fish.json file included in the translations file or extract new files just for t_fish.json.

Thank you FrantzX.
Can you look at this topic please:

Check out the Crossbell Translation Tool. He has everything ready for download in nicely formatted json files that you can add translation to very easily and inject very easily. It's what I used to roughly do the quest log. The quest log is rough because it's google translated, but believe me the CTT is set up perfectly to do the job.

That's the tool I've been using and it's always shows me errors whenever I'm extracting or building a new ISO using the provided Json files included

I suspect unless FrantzX comes back with some update on any work he's done, as I think he mentioned he'd try to do earlier, this is basically the final version. It works, you can play it to the end, and the main story is mostly spreadsheet and works really well. This is currently the best way to experience the game in english.

I'm planning on doing a re-machine-TL, using FrantzX's tool instead of trying to parse the decompiled script from a python tool.
I have a idea for the tokens: replace the tokens with special characters, and replace the special characters with tokens when re-inserting the script. That way, I can translate block by block instead of line by line, which should make the translation quality higher.

According to flame, 63 chars is the hard max for textboxes. I haven't tested this myself, because I currently don't have the game located on my local storage device right now.
55 = any number of lines
5C/5D = 5 lines max
Portrait = 38 chars/line
Face = 48 chars/line
Neither = 60 chars/line

Original Text:

Old transformed text (Each individual line is translated and replaced):
まあ、あちらにしてみれば
自分の縄張りに飛び込んだ犯罪者を
他人任せにするわけだからな。
──どうします?
このまま踏み込みますか?

Old transformed text -> translate.google.com:
Well, if you do it over there
A criminal who jumped into his own territory
That is why I make it others.
What do you do?
Do you step on as you are?

Old transformed text -> translate.google.com -> back into the script

#00001F#3309VWhat do you do?\x01

Old transformed text -> excite.co.jp/world/english_japanese/:
Oh, when I take that.
The criminal who plunged into his territory.
It's because it's the reason made leaving all to others.
──How is it done?
Do you step just as it is?

Old transformed text -> translation.infoseek.ne.jp:
Well, as for that place
The criminal who jumped into one's territory
I leave it to another person.
──What would you do?
Do you step as it is?

Old transformed text -> translate.yandex.com:
Well, there we have it
Their turf and jumped into criminals
Others leave it to just you.
──What would you do?
This depressing you?

Old transformed text -> ATLAS (local):
Oh dear, If you make it there
The criminal who jumped into my territory
..becoming it.. . because it makes it to leaving others.
the -- How do you do?
Do you depress it as it is?

Old transformed text -> LEC (local):
Oh, as for that place
The criminal who jumped into one's territory

Do you step as it is?

New transformed text (Remove leading/trailing per block operations and newlines without ending punctation):
まあ、あちらにしてみれば自分の縄張りに飛び込んだ犯罪者を他人任せにするわけだからな。

New transformed text -> translate.google.com:
Well, if you do it over, you make other offenders who jumped into your territory.

What is the best machine translation?

For comparison:

Kitsune spreadsheet English:
Well from their point of view a criminal entered their land and now they have to hand over the investigation to outsiders.
So what's the plan?
Just move in?

    yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
    @TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
    I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    @Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    @TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

    be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
    It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
    It inserts a newline in a random spot.

    do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    @Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
    @The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
