I just used HDloader it's still at it please wait it's been 3 hours now and it's still going. last time I did it with my friends I got no idea how long it took cuz we started the format and we had to go out at the time and didn't come home till the next day. But that was with a 80GB seagate.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

BTW which version is newer. I have 2 HD loader one that doesn't say a version which I got from a memory card from a ebayer and another V0.8C

I just got a fatal error. Is the harddrive no good? im going to try again using 0.8c

You can use uLaunchELF to format the hard drive too. If you get the same error, perhaps it is a bad hard drive.

Or, you can just format the drive with your computer as FAT32 And use Open PS2 Loader (OPL) instead of hdloader. It has numerous advantages over HDL, like better game compatibility, virtual memory card support, and you can use USB drives and network shares.

The drive worked fine when i used the usb adapter on my computer when I first got it but that wasn't ps2 format. It had 2 partitions. Does that matter, does the hdloader format the hole harddrive?
Open PS2 Loader doesn't like tony hawk 3 for some reason. played fine with hdloader
Im going to try your methed next, are you sure it needs to be FAT32, isn't that a format for sd cards

I turned off my ps2. the the harddrive isn't detectable anymore on my computer using the usb tool. SIgh I killed the harddrive didn't I. I got this harddrive from ebay. I dought they will let me return it. I shouldn't of been so greedy and got the highest capacity one. If I can't fix this I have to resort to ESR disks I guess.
P.S my network adapter, where you connect the IDE harddrive they wiggle a big. Is this normal.

Be careful when you are buying used hard drives off ebay. It's possible that they may not work. I would recommend buying a mSATA-to-IDE adapter and a 44 pin IDE to 40 pin IDE adapter, then buying a 128GB mSATA drive. That configuration works well for me, and I can easily swap mSATA drives. (for example, one has FHDB installed, while another has PSBBN installed)

Yes, it is.

It worked when i plugged it in my computer the first time. Then I pop it in my ps2 and formated for 3 hours then gave me a fatal error the first time. Maybe that is what caused it. DIsk managment doesn't see any harddrive but divice management detects it.

those are all the ones that come up nxic and canada computers don't have them sigh. Which one is best. Also is there a capability list for Sata drives? Im assuming im looking for a laptop sata drive, how else would it fit? WIll it make a difference what version sata drive I get? Tell me the exact harddrive to get with a link so I can't make another mistake. I wasted 90 bucks on that harddrive with shipping.

Sometimes when I have had a disk not wanting to format. I have gotten it to work by first using diskpart's clean command on it.

Scroll through this article on how to do that.

http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/005929en

edit: This does erase everything

or if on linux I have dd zeros to the first few bytes.
doesn't detect it in that ether it only shows in device manager under disk drives and also under the usb part

HDD (if clicking) is almost certainly toast as you have worked out. As far as HDD compatibility is concerned there is a comprehensive list here :-

http://ps2drives.x-pec.com/?p=list
does that include sata drives. I know that site already thats how i picked out my drive but thanks for posting someone will see it that will help them.I got no idea you can put a sata drive in would of saved me alot. I need more information how to get it to fit into the slot. DO I need a 2.5 harddrive or will the full size fit somehow?

Should be able to cram the full size one in just fine. I don't think there's any significant difference in compatibility when using a sata<->ata adapter.

You can adapt SATA HDD's so they will work with the PS2 but you would need to buy a separate adapter. An extra expense. I just used FreeMC Boot and DVD's as it is cheap as chips to do if you have a PC and can get a Swap Magic Disc or similar so I have no real experience of what you are trying to do. As far as I understand (without modifications) you need a 2.5" IDE HDD.
