what is it good for when the tegra x1 only renders at 40% of its full potential when on the go and even when docking it uses only 70% GPU performance...

Well, this is a custom Tegra chip based on X1. 40% of its docked power is estimated to be about 400GFlops, which would be nearly 13x as powerful as a PS Vita, as an example. I'm not sure where you heard that it only runs at 70% GPU performance while docked, the math doesn't work given Switch's UE4 performance. Heat shouldn't be an issue either unless it's a really hot environment, so no throttling.

latest Digital Foundry video about the switch techs. it says in full dock mode the tegra only clocks to 700 MHz where the real tegra could do 1GHz and more.
I use a chip based on the same architecture (980 Ti) and it can hold 1500 MHz no problem.

another rumour that i shouldn't even take with a grain of salt. how is it supposed to handle 1080p/1440p if it's borderline weaker than the ps3? the ps3 can barely handle 720p

I don't know what to make of this. My question is, to connect it to the big screen, you need a monitor/TV with a displayport slot?

has been confirmed by an insider. until now all those "rumors" turned out to be true. we can conclude that the switch will once again be a very incompetitive device (performance wise). it will be even way weaker than the 3 year old "current" gen when it comes out. not even considering the ps4 pro or scorpio, of course.

This same insider has the same or even more credibility compared to Eurogamer since he's from the Wall Street Journal.

I predict Big N is again cheaping out on hardware and tries to convince everybody that good games do not need good hardware. that might be true, but it hasn't really worked out on the Wii U either. And the 3DS barely made it after a very rough start. I remember buying it and not having anything to play after OOT3D for months.
This time (switch) I am NOT an early adopter and will wait it out.

Clock speed is far from the biggest factor in determining performance. If we were to assume things based on that, Switch at 768MHz would be half the power of your 980Ti, right? That'd be ridiculously powerful for a $250 device.

It's not weaker than a PS3 in docked mode. With 4 SMs it would do ~1TFlop of performance, right behind XB1's 1.3TFlops. Puts Switch at like 80% of XB1 power.

Matter of fact, this means Switch is about 2x the performance of XB360 in portable mode. That said, it's still gonna be 1080p/720p. No way they hit 1440p/1080p with these numbers.

well, actually NO. since a 980 Ti has way more shaders (more than 10 times more) the tegra x1 is aprox. at one tenth of the 980 Ti's performance (in real world even less because of memory bandwidth etc.). but since it only clocks at 770 MHz max. the Switch would under 10% of the 980 Ti's performance at max.
under 10% of the performance a two year old GPU... does not sound THAT encouraging.

did you just compare the switch to a part that's as big as the switch itself what the fuck

no. I compared the switch's GPU to the same GPU that could be had years ago (when the switch is released). of course they could shrink it or pascal it and double the performance.
a 1 GHz clocked pascal Tegra would make up with what was stated in the press release ("most powerful GPU architecture...").
but that custom Tegra X1 at only 770 MHz seems to be a cheap out solution as we are used to see from Nintendo.
bottom line: under 10% of a 980 Ti is shit. in real world it will even be 5% or less.
Nintendo could easily get a twice as fast GPU as they have with a decent mobile GPU, but they are too concerned to get a cheap device at all costs.
I am predicting that history is gonna repeat itself once again. third partys are going to find out quickly that the device is for casual games only because ambitious projects cannot be done on that hardware. and soon we are going to have a Wii U again. but this time it's mobile /wow!).
