ips looks better when looked at from an angle, colors are a bit more vibrant.

but its really not half as big a deal as people are making it out to be
it is a big deal if you . . . i dont know . . . move while playing like me and many other older gamers . . . you just must not have gone to arcades growing up . . . but i promise you better viewing angels is not simply a meh thing

Got a white N3DS XL, both screens are IPS. Seems like the Pink N3DS XL seem to be both IPS as well. Will ask my gf if I can check with 3dident tomorrow.

Everywhere all report TN for the N3DS Black Friday. There are few/couple reports of IPS but no proof/evidence whatsoever so not count. I personally rave over the Black N3DS non XL. Having IPS screen would be great bonus. Shame

It would've been nice to get a dual IPS black n3DS. But I guess at 99.99, they had to make some cutbacks.

I'd still like one with dual TN if the top and bottom had nice and consistent contrast, brightness, and color temperature.

I have a dual IPS 3D Land n3DS, which is nice, but has some imperfections.

Really? Can you post pictures? What serial number, YW + 5 number following up?

I feel like having one ips and one tn is worse that having dual tn. The contrast between the two would probably bug me at first.

Yeah its a bit jarring at first. You get used to it however.

A thing I would really like to see is after-market IPS, or even OLED displays for 3DSes that you can install. I would love dual IPS on my o3DS XL. OLED would be even better but I don't see that happening.

I'm really hoping for this to be a thing too. Modders are starting to do backlit mods for GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GBA and other handhelds too. I'd be willing to pay for the better screen quality if someone out there can get them from the manufacturer or even make it themselves.

Yeah, it definitely would be very interesting. The only problem I see with this is trying to figure out how the 3D functionalty works on a hardware level, and then trying to recreate that accurately enough so no problems arise. Bottom screen shouldn't be a problem, since resistive touchscreens are already well known on how they work. It wouldnt be too hard to recreate that.

What is the batch number of the Black N3DS Black Friday with IPS?

So far, we have seen no proof that a Black Friday USA N3DS non-XL In the color BLACK comes in IPS that I am aware of. I have looked all over. The serials from the Super Mario 3D Land Edition are for the white one that came out in August. Someone previously posted pics but the buttons were black. Probably an XL. The pic in this thread too from CitizenSnips Shows TN upper and IPS lower. Not sure why it doesn't say USA after N3DS. Mine does, right above the screen types.

It does say USA in the pic

I'm wondering if that specific 3DS he has is from Black Friday and if it is what serial batch its from.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
