I see a lot of posts about A9LH, SA9LH(SafeARM9LoaderHax) and they're all really far above my head. what's so special/great about it? what can we do with this that we can't already do with CFW/Ninjhax? is there even a point to it, at this point? is it somehow more powerful, or reliable? If so, Why? and How? ...sorry for being a N00B on this, just really want some input on this. try and use SMALL words, like you're explaining this to a mentally deficient monkey with ADHD and Stockholm's Syndrome. (not really, that'd be a bit TOO mean, even for the toxic flamers here on GBATemp.)

It is basically a bootloader hack. With a9lh you can have both CFW and a fully updated sysnand which makes installing and using DSiware and GBA games much easier. Not to mention a 100% boot rate as well as a recovery mode that works even if sysnand is bricked. In addition, even if sysnand becomes physically damaged you can still boot to emunand as long as firm0/firm1 are intact.

There have been a few people who can't boot sysnand no matter what (not even a hardmod helped) but emunand still works thanks to a9lh. Without a9lh it would have been bricked so bad that not even Nintendo could have fixed it.

You know when you boot your 3DS normally in sysNAND thats how quick you can boot to your emuNAND with "true coldboot" and there is no chance you will see that ugly yellow screen, or install Virtual Console games twice using updated sysNAND.

-100% boot rate
-Brick restoration
-Allows you to update sysnand without losing hax
-removes the need to use emunand
This plus
CFW sysNAND which allows
installing GBA/DSi games once instead of twice
Cuts out emuNAND, saving memory
Faster boot time

Other features:
Since it boots at an extremely early point in boot cycle, it allows us to launch homebrews like Decrypt9 at that point. Meaning that we can back up and restore your firmware at the earliest point possible. This means even if you completely fuck up your sysNAND, you can still restore it if you remembered to back it up.

As CFW's can now right directly to your NAND, making them smaller and faster without the need for firmware.bin, patches to your nand for gba games, ect. Since all those features can now be written directly to your internal memory. There's also plans for CFW's to be booted straight from the internal memory instead of the SD card.

ah, I see now! thanks for the input! on a scale of difficulty, how hard is a9lh to install vs other CFW's? (aureinand, RXtools, cakes, pasta, etc) and is there a simple, effective way to install it, or a guide to installation that's so easy to follow, a caveman can do it? (geico, please don't sue me for that comment...)

Basically if you follow the guide to the letter, have some free time and don't be a complete idiot it's easy to install. --- https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki

ah, so it doesn't install with an app or .cia, then. I wonder if that would even be possible...

If you want basic CFW it's easy -- DOwngrade to 9.2 (if needed), run HBL, run Luma3DS and set it up. Simples. xD But if you brick, then there's no way to unbrick without a hardmod. A9LH makes that possible c: And with a CFW, most set up an EmuNAND which takes away 1gb (it's not a lot unless you have a small SD card) of the space on the SD card, so they can update to latest firmware but keep sysNAND on 9.2. I'd look at using Luma3DS whichever route you go down though, it's the best CFW out there.

I'm currently on 9.2 sysnand with RXtools emunand at 10.7. I have an 8GB SDHC card. I know it sucks, but it's the biggest storage I own (besides a 120 GB SSD in my laptop)

If you're scared of taking a few risks then stay with that setup, but if you want the best CFW out there, follow the guide. All I can say, really. xD

not really scared of taking risks, I remember when installing CFW's on PSP had a 50% brick rate. came out of that just fine. ....after a Pandora battery. damn, I feel old now :(

No, it does install with an app. (3dsx for first install) You just need to retrieve a console specific key and a few other files before you can run that app safely and successfully. It's retrieving that key (otp.bin) that turns most people away from the process. It's well worth it.

I meant "it doesn't install via an app or .cia" in the way that you don't just load the app and you're done, a la PSP CFW, where you just renamed the CFW to "UPDAT.DAT or similar and you were done. that WOULD be really cool for 3ds, if it ever becomes possible.
EDIT: I myself just finished installing A9LH. freeing up a whole GB, being able to update, and not having to switch between nands really sold it for me. loving it so far!

You're on Luma3DS, right? Because if you're not, switch.

I don't really care. just not my posts, not my threads, not my anything. go suck a dick, or whatever it is you do, but as long as you're on MY threads, be nice, be respectful, be helpful. otherwise, pack up, or shut up.
