Not sure what the best steps would be to get going on playing some games. Was going to order A Gateway but I'm not 100% sure.

CFW or Gateway?

The last number on your firmware is very important. I would start with CFW and see if it's good enough.

If the last firmware number is 0 then you'll need a DS flashcard.

In my opinion: Gateway offers little compared to current CFWs (you can run .3ds files from the GW red cart, which if you need the simplicity, is good, but that's it). You can actually do more with CFWs:

- You can run GBA games on AGB_FIRM for full-speed emulation.
- You can run SaveDataFiler with retail carts (can't do this with Gateway) to backup and manage your saves (there are open source homebrew versions of SaveDataFiler, but they're not quite as good yet).
- You can safely update your system firmware via rxTools devmode to 9.0-9.2 (or use Cooking Mama 5 EUR; your flag indicates the UK, so I assume you have a Euro 3DS), allowing you to cold-boot CFW right from when you hit the power button.

Basically, I would recommend updating your system to somewhere between 9.0 to 9.2 (no higher!), and just autoboot right into a CFW.

Any recommendations on a CFW?

I no longer have an O3DS (original/old 3DS), but if you're looking for simplicity, then I'd say go with Cakes; as far as I know, it pretty much provides the CFW/emuNAND part and nothing else. If you want or need the extra tools, you can give rxTools a try. You can always switch between them if you don't like one or the other, as they both use the Gateway emuNAND setup.

Just be careful with it, read up on each function before trying new things, and you should be fine. If you're not sure, always ask for help in the rxTools thread before experimenting on your own.

Trying to install CIA's but FBI keeps giving me error.

You probably didn't do the "create a dbs directory and create the files title.db and import.db" part.

Did that part. Installed 3 things. a .3ds game converted to .cia and that worked fine but I can only save to nand and not sd, it fails in fbi. Devmenu and bigblue menu installed 100% but after unwrapping gift I had 2 black icons that wouldnt get past the 3ds inital screen.

Only 1 version of the gatway launcher.dat worked for me. I tried about 5. Not sure if thats 4.1 ofw related or not since im a noob at 3ds.

What happens when you try to install titles to sd (selectable with R)?
(btw, don't install anything to nand now, even if you can)

Get same error as before. Yeah nothing going to nand anymore. i was trying to get devmenu or bigbluemenu installed to delete the cias on nands but I cant get them to install. Also, i treid a few ds profile exploits and they never worked. Should I update this to 4.5?
