Super Mario Maker Sells 1 Million Units Worldwide

smm_1million_social_media.jpg

Nintendo has just announced Super Mario Maker has sold 1 million units worldwide:
For the last 30 years, Super Mario fans have proved to be some of the most passionate, loyal and dedicated video game fans on the planet. Traditionally that fervor has been most clearly measured by unit sales, and with more than 310 million units sold and counting in the Super Mario franchise, that fervor is historic. And now, with the recent release of the Super Mario Maker game for the Wii U console, Nintendo has a new way to measure fan engagement: level creation.

Today it was revealed that more than 1 million units of Super Mario Maker have been sold around the world since its launch on Sept. 11. The addition of 1 million new "fan" developers has led to the creation of more than 2.2 million Super Mario courses, which combined have been played nearly 75 million times.

"For Mario fans around the world, including myself, Super Mario Maker was a dream 30 years in the making," said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. "The game has captured and unlocked the imaginations of gaming fans of all ages and brought their dedication to Nintendo to a whole new level."

Honestly... I didn't think it was going to be this successful.
The game seems like a gimmick which various Flash Mario games had already tried out.
I'm not denying that it's a bad game but holy shit. This is supposed to be a minor spin-off game isn't it?!

P.S. inb4 Sonic Maker 2016 (...or not, since it's SEGA)

I suppose this is one of those "in related news" type situations where I find some xbone game or something that has long since broken 1 million and is probably considered a failure.

I shall try to be happy though.

Whoa. Incredible. I never expected that this "game" would be this successful at this time (19 days is it?). But that's because I don't like these platform Mario games because I feel them boring, So, with that opinion, who would have bet that this "game?" would be ever this successful this early?

Good job, Nintendo. Hope these sells make them think to do better or at least good games.

Really?! Coz the only recent 'big' sellers I can think of that did better than this over a similar period were Destiny and whatever CoD released last year - and those figures were multi-platform.

Not all that much for a super mario game (which was the best selling game of all time til minecraft rolled in), but, keep in mind that this title only came on a single platform, that has been dead for some time now

I was thinking about this concept the other day. Nintendo could easily port this concept to any of their other titles:

Megaman Maker - Imagine designing your own bosses!!
Metroid Maker
Donkey Kong Maker
Any 2D Title Maker

You don't like Mario? Its basically mario with unlimited stages.
Which is great, except Mario editors have been widely available for decades at this point (slightly less for the higher level stuff) and very much runnable on things we deal with around here (plus PCs) for well over a decade as well.

The similar period might be the thing that gets me in this. However I did have a quick scan of vgchartz (I know, though I am not sure if they would inflate figures) before I posted that and there were some 2015 xbone titles (seemingly only counting the xbone sales) that show similar numbers, and that is with basically 0 in Japan too. Link for the lazy http://www.vgchartz.com/platform/68/xbox-one/

I'm getting my Wii U for Zelda. So, next year? I'm not getting this or any of the Mario games. I already played Wind Waker so I didn't need to get it for that.
The Xenoblade game looks cool too.

Is this really surprising? 2D Mario games always sell well, and this one allows you to play an un-ending supply of games in 4 different Mario engines. Oh, and you can create your own levels, too, if you're into that sort of thing, with some really powerful and simple-to-use tools.

Would you like to explain why you think it's dead, especially with exclusives that sell like this? And no, "muh anti-Nintendo bias" is not a reason.

I suppose it is not dead until games stop getting released but sales have been eclipsed by devices out for far shorter amounts of time, many leading developers/publishers have abandoned or all but abandoned the platform, those devs/publishers that have not abandoned it are mainly just paying lip service/doing the bare minimum, it is rarely a lead platform for anything and of the multiplatform stuff few times will the Wii U end up with a competitive version, much less a leading version (though such things are far better than in console generations prior to the last one), much middleware that is popular on all the other big platforms is not on the Wii U (see things like the modern unreal engine not really being there). So not dead but pretty much a persistent vegetative state.

its at times like this when we all take for granted the wiiu is dead , then the likes of FoF should just release everything they have on the console and let the people take over.

Probably these"one million failures" had a much higher production and promotion budget.
