The OpenDNS guide is easy to do and works perfectly.

Couldn't access eShop, tried to search for new update and got error message, played a round of Mario Kart 7 with no lag.
Yep, that works for me too just now. got this message, "An error has occurred. Please try again later.".I can play online again without worrying about updates for now! B-)

Didn't work for me.

I'm torn anyway, there is some stuff from the eshop I've been meaning to download.

Maybe I'll just get a Sky and be happy.

Well this does block access to the eShop so if you really really need to get that stuff off the eShop you'll need to unfortunately update :( (I recommend waiting for GW!)

OK I know double posting is not allowed but I need to bump this thread.

After messing around in DDWRT I think I managed to block *.shop.nintendowifi.net and *.shop.wii.com
IDK if this block updates or not but it did block eShop (error code everytime).

You just use DNSMasq.
houB6kf.png

Save, apply and restart your router (or just dnsmasq).

EDIT: Just to be safe, do this:
Code:
address=/.shop.nintendowifi.net/127.0.0.1
address=/.shop.wii.com/127.0.0.1
address=/.shop.nintendo.net/127.0.0.1
address=/a248.e.akamai.net/127.0.0.1

EDIT2: Just tested with eShop and System Settings updater. Both returned an error.
Btw this will block for any devices under the router. So be careful if you have another Nintendo device.

For those with an ASUS router like the AC-68, etc.

Login via SSH (admin@routerip, yourpassword) and add the lines to /jffs/configs/dnsmasq.conf.add

This is really great. More people should be aware of it.

Using opendns and blocking them through that is the best way... Configure your router to pass out the opendns DNS IP through DHCP. Make sure you restart your 3ds so it picks up the new settings from the router. Also very important make a Win32 disk image of the sdcard before testing so you can undo easily.

I made these changes and now going to the eshop gives 005-4320 error code which is good! Now I can leave wifi on without any concerns

OpenDNS is indeed an effective blocking method and its also consistent since it isn't dependent on all the various different router menus out there. In the original post I wanted to avoid using a third party service for something this small, but I do have the OpenDNS method listed in the original post as a quote in the end so there's that :)

Another method is setting up a DNS server that returns some nonsense IP when those addresses are queried. This has the advantage of easy setup, as you only have to config the DNS on your 3DS, other devices remain unaffected. Also, if the server is strong enough it can be made a public one where everyone just point their 3DS to.

Downside is, well, maintenance.

Let's not forget about possible DNS amplification attacks if one were to run one of these public DNS servers. It would be best to keep things local IMO.

OpenDNS looks like the best bet. At first I thought it was something I needed to install. But actually it's completely webbased (the only software needed is a basic client app to update the IP on the account for those on ISPs that use dynamic IPs, which is what most folks likely have)

So I just configured my LAN connection to use their DNS servers as well and confirmed they are blocked on my PC, thus will definitely carry over to my virtual access point:

And thus results in this when I attempt to view any of the blocked domains in my web browser:

Others who do not need a complicated setup like mine could just point their routers to OpenDNS's DNS servers to apply the filtering to the entire wifi network in their house. So this would be the best option for those who don't have a router that supports this kind of filtering or is finding that they have the feature, but it doesn't work correctly for whatever reason.

EDIT: CONFIRMED! This works for me. I get a 005-4320 error when I attempt to use eShop. Looks like I'm good to go! :D

You can have only the 3DS use OpenDNS, as well. TidusWulf's guide is one to do just that.

Read the thread.
(No. Pokemon, Smash, and Mario Kart all work perfectly for me.)

Don't.

You're not looking for your router, you're looking for your modem's IP.
Once you've registered, go here: https://dashboard.opendns.com/settings/
Add your network (Verify your IP with WhatIsMyIP), then click your IP.
Under "Manage individual domains," add shop.nintendo.net and shop.wii.com to your "Always block" list.
After that, just follow TidusWulf's guide.

OpenDNS won't work on 3DS since it needs your IP updated. I'm going for an universal solution where it works on all networks.

I'm not sure what you mean.

He's referring to dynamic IP's (DHCP). This is often used for residential customers with an ISP so whenever the IP changes after a set amount of time you'll need to tell OpenDNS your new public IP. This can be done manually, or by some compatible routers.. This is what I wanted to avoid doing, so that's why I did the rule blocking method in the OP.

But doesn't the 3ds download the update itself only in sleep mode?Just don't put it in sleep mode to be safe or i'm missing something?
