Hardware Repurchase Question

I have been thinking about repurchasing a X360 or buying a new XBO...
I had an original "phat" 360, but sold it because I could play most of the multiplat games on my laptop. I missed out on the later Halo games, as well as the Kinect. Should I buy another 360, go with XBO (I already have a PS4), or just use money for games on the systems I have (PS3, PS4, Wii U, PC)? Thoughts on this greatly appreciated

this is my opinion.

do you miss the games you played on the x360? because XBONE (or XBO like you called) is not backward compatible, you can't play 360 games on it... (but i think you already know this)

do you really want to play the games from xbone or x360? if there are no enough exclusives you want just get games for the ps4\other platforms you have...


search for the exclusives and check how much you want to play them...

You did not miss out on much by missing out with the kinect, indeed you could have most of the interesting stuff if you picked up a kinect, wired it into your PC and looked up all the homebrew people made for it (most of which was "that's really cool" and less "wow that is really useful"). Many would argue you did not miss out on much by not playing the later Halo games either.

I did have a thread covering the exclusives and what might go there, it is a bit out of date now (NIS released quite a bit, much of which we have since reviewed)

If you do buy one then make sure you get a later one, Jasper if old style and basically any slim. If you want to mod it then be a bit more selective but otherwise it is all good. Older ones are not so reliable, especially if you want one for sticking in a cupboard as part of a collection.

I do much prefer the Microsoft controllers (though I have still yet to put any time in on a PS4 one so pending that, the earlier ones do not do wonders for my hands), however this appears less "what do I get?" and more "should I go back?".

I would probably go with a Slim model. What all can be done with modding and is it worth it to do modding? I have no modding experience with X360, only softmod experience with PS3 and WiiU. If I do mod system, which model/version of Slim should I get?

There is not much in the way of pure softmodding on the 360 -- the saves stuff you had another thread on and so called PIRS DLC (which has a lot of good stuff, including fallout GOTY content and some borderlands stuff, but it is still a short list) being the only things still active (all older methods have since been blocked). To that end you will be soldering, or getting someone else to solder.

Modding is tied to dashboard* version you have installed and version of the hardware you have, though in recent times there have been options for those with later systems. There is the slightly lesser DVD mod that might not require soldering (though you will have to pull the 360 apart) that allows you to play unmodded games you burn to dual layer discs.

*technically it is not dashboard but as the dashboard version is easy to find out and is updated in 99% of cases at the same time as the underlying stuff that does trouble modding then it is easier to just say dashboard.

What you can do with a JTAG/RGH type mod...

Region free (though it is far from all games having it there is still some region locking), running XBLA, running DLC, running homebrew (not a lot is available), running hacked games, USB loading, hard drive loading, installing any hard drive, cheats/trainers, playing system link games over the internet and stuff like that. RGH/JTAG will cost you xbox live, DVD mods did not and technically you could get on xbox live with serious effort on RGH modded machines (though it will be stock if you do) but it is not worth it when normal 360s are as cheap as they are.

DVD modding is separate to JTAG/RGH -- with a JTAG/RGH machine you will not be able to play copied discs, however as you can just install it on USB or your hard drive then most people do not care.

You probably don't. It was blocked with no going back in the August 11th 2009 update. Unless you have a 360 stashed before then (or not updated which is even rarer) it is not going to happen. Likewise you are going to want one made around then if you want it to be somewhat reliable which is even less common.
You might still find one for sale though so I mentioned it.
If you do manage to find a Jasper motherboard 360 at the level you can do the JTAG stuff for then I would pick it up just to flog on. The parts you need to do it are a computer with a parallel port and a stuff you can get for not at lot with a trip to basically any radioshack.

I should also note if you find a Jasper motherboard with around that level of update (even a few after) it is good for the easier versions of RGH so maybe also consider it then.

RGH also depends upon hardware version and update levels, for those though you will typically be buying in a $20-$30 chip (maybe more if you buy a programmer rater than building one) and doing a fair bit of fine soldering.

Halo games are coming to Xbox One, and since you've already had a 360, I'd say Xbox One would be the way to go. It's always good to have another console, for all of those exclusives which will surely appear sooner or later, not counting those, which already have.

Anyway, I'm always surprised to see people ask these questions. You know what's out there, you've had a 360, you own three consoles, so you're obviously into gaming, and you must have personal preferences. "Hey guys, so I have these pockets full of money, and I'd really like to buy SOMETHING, but I can't decide. Knowing nothing about me, nor my preferences, please, guide me". It's kind of ridiculous, really, especially since new consoles aren't exactly cheap. You, better than anyone else, should know if you're willing to spend your money on something.

So that wasn't exactly helpful, but it had to be said. If I had the cash, I'd get an Xbox One, just to have it covered. If I had the cash, I'd get an Xbox One, just to have it covered. If you're a financially capable, there's no reason not to own every console out there. There will always be games that either are exclusive, cost less, or for some reason look better on a specific platform.

Exclusives seem to be becoming less and less of a thing, and I love that.

As for not owning every console... unless you want to get into hacking them then I say wait until all is said and done and then clean up at the end.

No hacks, no hacks predicted any time soon, no real games above the PS4 right now, no backwards compatibility, no real features above the PS4 right now (the PS4 is paid online these days after all)....

Some would say you would be wasting your money getting a xbone over a PS4, I am not convinced of that but I would be easy to convince it is pointless having both right now. It may come to pass that the xbone gets something great but it is not like it will hard to find if it does.

Do YOU think it's worth getting? Does the game library appeal to you, as a PS4 owner? Come on, man. These are questions you should be asking yourself, not strangers on internet. I'd get Xbox One for Quantum Break alone, but that's me. What about YOU?

Right now? No, there just aren't enough games out. And, the ones that are out, 50% or more, are just last gen games running on the One. (This seems to apply to the PS4 also.)

I wonder if this console generation is going to do as well as the last. There are routinely sales on current gen games, systems, and accessories. This didn't happen on the 360/PS3 for awhile.

Multiplatform games are, by definition, multiplatform. It's not like the PS3 and PS4 got multiplatform games, which you couldn't play on your laptop. I don't know why we're still talking about it. If you want it, get it. If you're not sure, don't get it. Jeez. If anyone should be trying to convince you to buy a console, it's the company behind it, not strangers.

This seems to apply to the PS4 also.

This guy gets it. People are quick to praise Sony, but one look at the demos section in PS Store will give you a gag reflex (unless you're a sucker for sports and LEGO - go multiplatform games!). The new interface sucks, and support for 3D BluRay movies came out just last week. There's no YouTube application, there are no classics (even though the PS4 is more than capable of emulating PlayStation, any other retro platform - Heck, even the PS3 will let you create your own "PS2 Classics", and run them on any softmodded console). You can't play audio CDs, SACDs and both PS4 and Xbox One have about the same number of exclusive games, most of which are bullshit indie titles.
