...on the iPhone.

Atlus' email announcement said:
Continuing ATLUS' conquest of the portable consoles, the original Shin Megami Tensei is now coming to the iOS phone near you!

Start from the very beginning of the series, clock in over 40-60 hours of playtime, and get to know your demons better.

[...] check out the first trailer here:

The game releases March 18, 2014 for $7.99 on the App Store; you can find more info on Atlus' own page here.

Worth noting: This seems to be based on the PSX(?) remake, not the original SNES version. I wouldn't get your hopes up for a SNES release on the Virtual Console or anything. It does bode well for the older SMT games in general, though. Maybe we'll finally see a translation for SMT If..., which saw an iPhone release last spring in Japan.

Ehh... at least they're localizing it - I'm cool with that. If the game sells, maybe it'll find its way to Android or consoles as a digital release.

There is an official Android release, which appears to be identical to the iPhone version. I've tweeted at Atlus asking about the possibility of an Android release, but no response so far. It's worth noting that the Android version states in the description

"!WARNING
This game is not translated and displays Japanese text only."

while SMT II's page says
"WARNING! This is a Japanese language role playing game with no English translation now or ever."

Dunno if the same holds true for the iOS app pages.

Foxi for a report you didnt do your research... its JAP tho....
Localization and porting are two different matters entirely. The above video is clearly in English, which is the whole point. :P

If it makes you feel better then I'll specify - I hope an English version of the game will make it to Android or to consoles as a digital release. There. ;)

Not worth it, pick up the rom and a translation if you need it. If this was on the eshop, I'd be for it, not good Atlus especially since SMT IV is a 3DS exclusive, you could've put this on the Eshop for the same price.

AtlusUSA only localizes games, they don't make them.

It's Ok, but Sometimes I feel like some console games like Gta, Persona, and so on should not be on touch screen, I just don't like the fact that I have to press on the screen with my thumbs and taking over the game screen time to time, (when the game was originally made for console), it just don't feel appropriate to have it on a mobile device, UNLESS it's a spinoff like Deus Ex the fall, (Which was specifically made for mobile).

I feel the same about touch screen controls, but I still have an xperia play, so... It's not too bad for me. :D
And if I ever upgrade, a PS3 controller works as well (though I wouldn't wanna bring it out of the home, hah).

This game is extremely dated, but the story is excellent, imo.

I saw this, and was disappointed that it was for ios. I thought hey, at least it will be better than the emulated copy of the fan translation I currently have on my phone right? Then I saw the virtual buttons and all hope was lost

Really? Why couldn't it have been on the 3DS and Vita?
If nintendo and sony were really thinking, it would be a good idea for them to include a virtual machine for a custom version of android available for their handheld. they could program the buttons to be recognized similar to the controllers already available on that platform, and then the 3ds and vita would have compatibility with an even broader range of software like this. They could even make a profit off it if they charged a small fee

The good news is that it does seem to be, essentially, running inside an emulator with touch input. I'll admit I don't know much about how secure iOS apps are or how they're compiled, but if that's the case, it might not be impossible to rip the ROM out for use in other places.
