I think it is integrated in the system firmware, and it is especific for each firmware version, so each console is locked to its region eShop

Even IF you get over the need for a Japanese console, it will only work with a Japanese cartrige of Pokemon XY. So unless you've been spending 50+ hours playing on a Japanese cartridge, you're out of luck.

Incorrect. Pokebank doesn't care what region your cart is. Pokemon can be inserted into any region cart for some weird reason

How could they possible test that? Did they use emunand on a japanese 3DS to transfer pokemon to a US/EUR cartridge using Pokebank? You think that Nintendo would have put some checks in place to prevent that. At any rate, since Nintendo servers are being crushed by Japanese traffic as a result of Pokebank (who knew transferring what basically amounts to text files would be so server taxing?), we wouldn't see Pokebank for a loooooooooooong time. And I seriously doubt that Nintendo will pull a "Revengeance" move on us and give us a Pokebank release date 3 weeks before it's actually released. We're seriously looking at a mid-2014 release date, probably the summer.

No, they used an up to date Japanese 3DS. Pokemon X/Y are a little different from other 3DS games in the fact the out of region carts will still be recognized by the system, but still can't be played. I assume Pokebank is the reason

There's actually another reason why it was pulled. The servers thing might have been an excuse. It was possible to hack pokemon to appear as if they were bred/caught in Kalos, making them able to enter Kalos-only tournaments. Apparently this version fixes that. Additionally, they said they fixed "the issue that crashed servers" or something. It wouldn't surprise me if there was no server issue, but this was the reason.

So it's region-free in that you can only boot it, but not play it? Region-locking on the 3DS is a disgrace.

I doubt that Nintendo can fix "hacked pokemon" since it's easy to create pokemon in older games and transfer them to newer games, then to XY, 100 percent legit-looking. Releasing Pokebank would mean a huge boom in hacked pokemon since XY is pretty secure and vulnerabilities in other games will allow the transfer of hacked pokemon.

They CAN fix Pokemon that originated in Kalos being transferred, and they did. Obviously BW Pokemon originated in Unova or something before that, Kalos is impossible.

Not only Unova, you can transfer all the way back as diamond and pearl, and I think there's a way to transfer (both legit and illegitimately) pokemon from the GBA versions to the DS versions. I think pokemon transferring from other games was a mistake, and only XY should of had that ability.

With "something before that" I meant all Pokemon games before BW, including Hoenn and whatever the DP region is called. And I'm not really sure what you mean by that last sentence?

By the last sentence, I meant that having the ability to use Poketransfer to transfer pokemon from BW and before to XY was a mistake. They should have "started afresh" with this whole new console generation, and forgotten about the other games completely.

Ah. They did more or less by only allowing Kalos-originated Pokemon to join tournaments and stuff. Of course it's still easy to get yourself a 6IV Ditto and give it a Destiny Knot, but at least SOME work will have to go into it. Besides, no transfer whatsoever would have made people rage.

Absolutely disgusting opinion.
