Hi I have just bought 2 3ds-xl's for the kids for xmas and am looking at getting a flash card like I did with their previous Nintendo d's.

I have been reading that they only work on them if the firmware is 4.1-4.5 and I have just opened on up and checked and it is, the trouble is that they are for my young kids.

I need to know if it is going to keep popping up saying it needs updating or anything like that because I know the kids will end up clicking update at some point if it does.

Also will I be able to use any of the wi-fi functions if I get the R4i Gold 3DS Deluxe Edition

Please help I have left it really close to xmas now.

Don't setup wireless connection, add parental control, tape the wireless switch.
You were able to use wifi function for streetpass/eshop but with firmware 7.0 not atm but maybe soon in the future.
If the 3DS is gonna be in the house AND you don't buy any games requiring version 4.5+ its safe as it won't download the update and prompt.
Check here for firmware requirement hide other games until you get flashcart http://3ds.essh.co/

Tape the wifi button? I haven't really had a good look at the console itself I just turned it on to check firmware.

my hands were sweating I was so worried about it updating itself.

It will only update if it has a source to get the firmware from. Thats either from Nintendos server which can easily be stopped if you kids don't know how to setup wifi connection and the 3DS stays away from Nintendo Streetpass hotspots (keep it in the house kids shouldn't take 3DS to school some dumbass would rob it)
Or through games, there are about 25 games requiring firmware 4.5+ so hide them these include pokemon, zelda albw and some others.

Taping the button was just a random suggestion don't need to that but you can to stop kids form mistakenly turn wifi on if you live near any nintendo hotspots. http://www.nintendo.co.uk/Nintendo-3DS/StreetPass/Hotspot-Finder/Hotspot-Finder-116574.html

Yea you do. If your wifi switch is turned on, even if you haven't setup the connection it will automatically connection to find you streetpass data & download update. They usually have them in public places like McDonalds etc.

It would if it gets connection and have enough time just don't turn on the wireless and tape it, tell the kids if they ever remove the tape they will lose 3ds rights forever and santa won't bring them xmas gifts etc.

Ok I see what you mean.

Damn I really hope they don't press it. I live in the middle of nowhere and there is nothing around us apart from a pub and wouldn't you know it the pub is a bloody hotspot

Would it still ask me if I wanted to update if it is accidentally turned on it does it just update itself automatically without asking as soon as it find a hotspot?

Sorry for asking so many questions it's just I really don't wanna mess these up.

It always asks before doing an update. It will download automatically but won't install without permission. It will keep nagging you until you do it or get rid of the downloaded update with a system format.

If one of them does download it by accident is it reasonably easy (without causing any other problems) to do a factory reset to stop it keep prompting to install the update.

It is easy to format the memory of the 3DS so it won't ask you anymore to update until it download the file again, but it deletes all things (Don't forget to remove SD card if you don't want to deletes saves when formatting). When you will have the flashcard, do a backup of the 3DS nand using it's menu so even if it's updated you could go back using hardware mod.

oh wow so there is a way to downgrade it again to my current version (4.4) if somebody accidently updates it? as long as I have backed up the nand using the flash cart?

Yes, there is a way to downgrade by reflashing the backed-up nand to the 3ds. But the process has to be done with a hardware hack not a software, so you will hve to solder a few wires onto the motherboard.

It actually looks fairly simple, all you do is solder four wires to a motherboard and to a mini sd card adapter...there's even a video on how to do it with the xl. The only thing you would probably have to watch out for are cold solder joints and making sure you don't let solder run everywhere on the motherboard. If you update, and you don't feel like downgrading yourself, you might be able to ship it off to a temper here who could do it for you if they agreed to.
