It was pure genius on Nintendo's part to put the wifi switch in the same place as the power-switch of the ds-lite. It's so natural to accidentally turn on the wifi.

Boots to a black screen only, You could disconnect the Ariel from the card but that still would get wifi in strong areas.
If you are thinking about opening the 3ds xl (7 screws) Then you could place the internal wifi switch Under the external rocker, As photo Near where it says da1 da2, If you do this method make sure wifi is set to off before putting it back together

Would it be possible to shield the wi-fi in some way, thereby preventing any accidental downloads. I recall the problems Apple had with the iphone 4 and signal loss when the unit was held in a certain way. Might it be possible to use some metal shielding as a liner in an external case to do this more effectively?

The other problem I can foresee is if your children want to play games together via system link. Wouldn't this require turning on the wi-fi and risk them accidentally downloading the updates? I know with my kids that is one of the things they really enjoy and could see them asking for that in this case as well.

Yup. Completely disabling Wifi will mean no multiplayer whatsoever, including local.

It's even better how the power button is in the same place as the Start/select used to be. I turned my 3DS off accidentally so often when I first got it >_>

Couldn't you just cut a paper clip or toothpick nicely so that you get a 3mm segment and shove that in the small hole above the wireless switch so it can't get pressed? You can then put tape over it so it can't come out and tell the kids not to press it. As long as you cut it very cleanly (exactly perpendicular), the force required to dislodge it would have to be significant.

If you format the flash, do you lose the Nintendo coins and such? I know they're mostly useless and not that cute, and I could just use the emunand anyway, but would you?
