It looks like a mess^^
Dumb as i am i cut open the wrong trace (the one coming from bottom right) so i had to use hotglue to prevent any shorts and keep the wire to the real CMD Trace in place until i could get a tiny bit of solder on for a decent connection on the real trace.
Slathering the whole thing in hotglue at low temperatures to keep it fixed and resistant to pressure, you can see the white wire that will remain in the 3ds constantly as i wont be resolving the hot glued link as its a pain in the ass :P

All in all, with a conducting pen and only cutting open the right trace this could even have looked pretty but then again i probably wont rip off a contact pad in my life ever again:)

Btw it does not seem that i can write back to the nand, it reads just fine but once i try to write it stops with an I/O Error.
Any ideas ? i suspect it has something to do with the card reader as it does the same with another 3ds !

I'm in the same boat... I can read all day long but not write. I get the I/O error, and when I try and use a built in card reader I got the error that the "Media is Write Protected" any thoughts?

If the reader is telling you that write protection is enabled , bridge the two leftmost pins using some tin

Good one Kane!
If writing gives you trouble, perhaps it's the reader itself OR either your wires are "too long" or the solders/connections are causing you to "lose" data.
But I believe that if the errors were related to data loss, it'd be happening for read too...

Try shortening your wires a bit.

PS: I used a 17cm USB shielded cable, for instance!

I had to bridge the two lock pins on the cardreader, but now my screen is yellow tinted XD I just cant fix this shit :P

Decided to tackle this today before I have to update to play A Link Between Worlds. All in all it didn't go to badly. Removing the cart slot carefully is a bitch though.

Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures while wiring stuff. I just wired the 4 wires required to some jumper plugs for easy access. I think someone else did something similar on a normal 3DS earlier in the thread.

Everything works as expected. :D

Sweet man!
That was a nice hidden access connector :)

Congratulations!

BTW, I wasn't "fully" aware that in order to do this in an original 3DS you have to remove the cart slot... Are you serious we have to remove the cart slot? :P

Cheers!

You can also bend the cart slot upwards to get to the point ^^
His mod is sweet though, if you check the links in his sig something like removing a cart slot is childs play for him :P

You don't actually HAVE to remove the cart slot on a normal 3DS to get at the point where you need to solder. However the other solder point is on the opposite side of the board, and is VERY tiny. So tiny that I even questioned whether I could solder to it reliably. Hence why I removed the cart slot to get at the resistor to solder to. I don't really recommend bending the cart slot up as you could rip the traces they connect to on the board. Just use de-soldering braid or get some chipquick. :D

I am going to backup mine nand soon, but I came up with a few questions :
why does the 3ds show the blue screen instead of just running normally when a sd is adapted?
Why couldn't the nand of the xbox360 readed this way? I had to buy a nandx or jrunner for that

You could do a x360 read sort of that way.....I used a cat 5 cable I cut in half, wired half of it to a db25 connector and the other half soldered to the X360 mboard. I then would use a cat5 coupler to connect the db25 side of the cable, when not in use I would stuff the motherboard side back in the case. I used nandpro (command line app) which would do the read thru the lpt port.....I think all these other solutions came out shortly after because first off a lot of people don't have PCs with LPT ports any more and the reading was tricky as not all LPT ports were 'clean' enough to do the dump, and second the speed was dog slow on the lpt read and crashed on people a lot during the read (especially on a big block nand). I found a useful trick to get my jasper dumped which was to make a batch file and dump the nand in smaller segments, then dumped again and compared the segments, then just stitched the segments together with a copy script. You only really needed the dump once but it was a pain in the ass on those big blocks (no problem on the 16mb nands). I did about 4 or 5 jtags that way including two for myself and few for some buddies......my xenon was already about half dead so did it first as a trial, but the jasper I did lives on and has done fine since 2009.

I just want to say kudos to everyone posting in this thread.....so much of the talk on this forum is whining 'when will Gateway support 6.x' stuff or senseless banter (which I admit I partake in). It is really nice to see people actually working on something and discussing their outcomes.

I have both a 3DS and an XL on 4.5 and am tempted to crack open the XL and do the mod wire. I do have Gateway though and figure any day now they will have their v2.0 out with the emunand so why bother, but it is damned tempting just to do something to pass the time until Emunand hits the scene. I also have an updated XL so not really much incenvtive in that I can play newer releases without updating/downgrading.

I am most interested in possible transfer tricks as my udpated XL has all my purchased content and ambasador games on it. I would love to transfer those to the 'Gateway' unit so I can have the best of all worlds. Wether it was done via EmuNand or Hardware mod it would be totally cool to have the same software on both units and be able to purchase/download games on the OFW unit and then just drop them on the others SD card and use them. That would teach Nintnendo not to use their damned non-unified account practices.

If anyone has tried this backup nand, transfer, restore nand process and can report their results that would be awesome.
