The Xbox One will have gaming achievements like the 360 has, but it will also have media achievements.
The media achievements are awarded from watching videos or listening to music, but ultimately, is it just another way to make money for Microsoft and its partners?

Would you buy a video just to get an achievement?
Can you earn achievements from watching your own media on the system?
How do you feel about these kind of skill-less achievements showing up on gamer's gamer cards, and boosting their gamerscore?

UPDATE:
Supposedly the media achievements are separate from gamerscore achievements and do not have a point value. Whether this means a separate list for media achievements is unknown.

Microsoft you evil geniuses, there is such a thing as over achievement. Leave at least some chance for the rest of us to catch up.

Anyway my dislike of the trophments system has previously been established. However I can approve of this use of the concept and will call it an improvement over the existing system. Rationale... gamification is good and this is an example of it being used in an interesting way.

You speak waaaay too smart for me, but I did make out "my dislike of the trophments system".. which I like, that's a cool word.

Personally I don't mind trophies/achievements if they unlock stuff in the game. So far Resident Evil Revelations is the only one who did it right, where the more stuff you do, the more you unlock. So you unlock weapons in multiplayer, or skins, or characters, I think even pieces of art. It's really nice and cool.

But this, this is just overdoing it. I'm somewhat glad Nintendo hasn't implemented a trophy system of any sort. I mean what, Metroid Prime 3 had it, but that was brilliant. Unlocked music, concept art, wallpaper type pictures, it was awesome. Those I didn't mind. But just for the sake of having a number? Eh, I'll pass. At least Sony had it where you could bet your gold trophies for real life stuff. If only it wasn't so broken and everyone could get in on the action.

Will it be enough to just purchase the videos, or will users have to watch all of them from beginning to end in order to unlock the achievement? And how will the box verify if we've actually watched the videos instead of just leaving them running while we're out? Via Kinect? :P

I think the title kinda makes it a bit worse than it is really is... I mean, if you buy a video and watch it, you somehow got an achievement. Think of it this way, you were going to buy the video/music anyway but got an achievement with it. But I still find it kinda pointless, imho O.o

MS could get away with this without it being a huge joke IF they didn't put a FIVE HUNDRED DOLLAR price tag on it. They could've took a loss on hardware, sold everyone in the world a boner for $200, and nobody would complain about ANY of the original nasty features (24 hour online checkin, forced kinect always on, etc) Imagine the advertising revenue; they could monitor if you are actually paying attention to the ads, etc

That sort of thing I am quite happy to see, to encourage your players to try different things and then reward them in various ways is a key part of game design. Borderlands did it right for me with the whole experience for different weapons/doing odd things/pushing limits (not played the second yet but I imagine there are similar things there).
When it annoys me is when it is just points for the sake of points, if it was a loyalty card type thing and could be converted into a new game* I will still have some reservations but could see it. My main problem though is it (along with the even worse thing of paid DLC for it) kind of killed in game cheats.

*at various points I saw Microsoft flirt with the idea and gave discounts for various things if you got so many points in a month or something.

Achievements to unlock things isn't all that bad, but I never cared to try and do any of them. I rather secrets/sidequests like in old shoold RPGs, though it's similar in a way, something about the achievements systems I just don't like.

Yup. I'm sure they'll program the Kinect to gently remind you to turn back to the screen should you ever try to look away or glance at the clock.

Also, "This isn't your grave, it's the future you made for yourself," etc. etc.

Ok... This is actually frigging brilliant. All those achievement hunters will be all over this and wasting money (gaining money for MS) plus, i challange anyone to not have the erge to watch another film/show after you've watched 9 to get the "watch 10 films in a day" achivement. This kind of sneaky money making ideas are something i approve of because its relying on the addiction of customers, Not forcing payments upon them. If it works then kudos to them.

ikr, fast just wins every thread using his smart words.
He could even convince me to become a nazi.

Are achievements actually worth anything?
They kinda seem like the opposite of achievements, kinda like an insignificant reward for doing nothing with your life.

Hmm...I'm not against it per se. I just don't see much achievements to be had with media, as simply watching or listening is something everyone can do (in other words: you don't ACHIEVE anything).

Here's something from the future:

Tantra master: Watched an entire porn movie without forwarding or pauzing at any point
Homie4Life: listened to 100 rap songs.
Pirates R us: listened to songs from at least 100 different albums
Marathon man: watched television/movies for at least 6 hours straight
Surviving those days of the month: watched at least 10 tearjerker movies
Neighbors? What neighbors? : watched an hour of BDSM porn on the loudest volume
