I was gathering some rom sets together, for play on the DS, and discovered that many of the emulators available either crash or slow to a crawl when confronted with a directory full of hundreds(if not thousands) of roms. At best, if your roms are all in one folder you are going to spend a looong time scrolling to the one you want.

This is irritating. So I wrote a little executable that creates folders by letter("0","A","B"..."Z") and moves your roms(any file really) into those folders based on the first letter in the file name.

That's it...that's literally all it does. There are no options. It runs on Windows only.

To use, place the executable file in your rom folder, and then run it. *The EXE has to be in the folder your roms are in, if you run it on your desktop or something you'll wind up with all your icons uselessly stored in folders A-Z*.

Just thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone else owns every 8-16 bit game ever made and needs to sort their "backups" for use on the DS. :)

This is useful. I've made tools similar to this in the past (and similarly dumb)
If you add some configuration options (like file extensions to search) and a GUI to this I think it could be a popular tool to use for all systems :)

It's not working for me.
I am using it to sort my GBC games
It says that I am missing MSVCP100.dll and I have it

It's working now i had to reinstall vcredist_x86.exe for it to work

Sorry about that - I re-uploaded the file to remove that MSVC dependency. I should have checked that beforehand.

That's a good idea....maybe I will whip up a GUI version if there is interest. Let me know if you have any other feature ideas.

I don't know if it fits with this tool but I've always wanted something that can individually zip my roms for use in emulators. There are some shareware tools but there needs to be a freeware one that can do it. It would be useful and maybe you could turn this tool into a more fully fledged ROM manager starting with that feature.
