Like/Dislike buttons are a bad idea since the majority of internet users seem to be thin-skinned losers whose whole sense of self-worth is defined by how many people they've never met (or "friends" as Facebook refers to them) like their tedious, ill-reasoned opinions and arguements.

Hey, that's only how I define most of my self-worth.

The "like" button was more than enough for this site, but even that seems to be abused (such as troll posts getting more likes than an actual helpful post.) But I am going to agree with P1ng on this one, a dislike button can and would be easily abused. If you really want evidence of that, remember when the blogs had rating systems and someone would just go through and one star every single blog, no matter what the content was? It got annoying and in the way, it didn't reflect on the quality of the blog, but it does show how quickly something like that can be misused.

Most of the staff including myself where very much against the introduction of a like button in the first place, we grudgingly agreed to one being introduced on the understanding that a dislike button would never be introduced. A dislike button by nature is a negative thing, one which can be easily abused and used as a tool of harassment against people. I can see situations occurring very easily where a certain group of people target one or more individuals and downvote every single post they make regardless of content. We really don't need something like that here and I think I speak for all the staff when I say that none of us have the energy or desire to look into things like "dislike button bullying" etc.

All in all a dislike button would just bring almost no benefits to the community and potentially a whole heap of issues, and we don't need that at all.
P1ng took the words right out of my mouth.
Just look at the amount of the closed threads and butt bleeding going on already. As if there isn't enough negativity around here and like whoring as it is, imagine the festering wounds that would be inflicted. And the other injustices that would happen, someone making a legitimately good point but anyone who disagrees (especially if the decent post sheds light in some corner that is unpopular).

Just imagine the amount opinions the already cause reactions hotter than the sun.

Not a good idea. Just use the like button sarcastically like I do.

A like/up button by itself is useful to mark which posts in a thread have the most community backing in general, like which ones are the most helpful, posted a solution, etc.
For instance, all of emigre's posts?
