the bios is used for more accurate emulation, sometimes it is used to interpret an instruction set when the when the feature is not emulated by the emulators reverse-engineered bios. Some don't have reversed engineered bios's and require you to dump one for yourself. It all varies on the emulator itself.

What is the GBC bios for, anyways? I just downloaded the emulator and some games to play on it, and it seems to work just fine for me. At least, I don't remember having had to look for a bios file.

It colorizes black and white games. Totally optional.

This isn't the case for the gameboy color. The bios is inaccessible after the game is booted up. All it really does is initialize memory, registers, palettes, etc. which is trivial. What's unique about it is that it contains pre-defined palettes for a number of games.

Ya after alot of trouble shooting something is definitely wrong with the GBC bios on the latest version when it is on tons of GBC games dont work and also a few GB games. I was using exactly the same roms and exactly the same bios in a earlier version and everything worked fine.

I have a question. I have a copy of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons. Will there be a way to tweak the internal emulator bios to fool the game into thinking it's on a GBA, and have access to the GBA shops in each game? I'm unsure if this question has been asked and answered already.

it's already implemented, just change "GBC on GBA" to On, in [GB Modes] - GameYob options.

I read that Metroid 2 has a preset color pallet, but I could never get it to work in any emulator. It doesn't even work in SGB mode. Anyone know how to do this?

Can GBA bios be used for color pallets on non colored gameboy games?

I think gba bios would be used by Drenn to enter in gba mode (don't know for sure since I never used the "GBC on GBA" option myself..). Not to play actual gba games, but for some game boy games to think they are in a gba. That would change the palettes a bit indeed, and add some new things to the game in some cases (Shantae for example, where you can get a new transformation..) ...but as far as I know, gba mode doesn't add a option to swipe custom palettes as in gbc

in GB modes
turn off gbc bios
then restart it and you able to play it
i tested it myself so far no problem

Edited: tested it again with bios on
freeze
so play it without bios on

Okay so you're the second person to mention a problem with the bios. I have no such problems... metroid II works with the bios enabled... can you confirm that it works with bgb or some other bios-compatible emulator? And, to be sure, you're not using the metroid II color hack are you?

It has a palette which is built-in to the gameboy color bios, which doesn't come with emulators. If you can get the gameboy color bios working, you can use that palette, among others. I mentioned how to use it in the first post.

Wait you mean... the gbc bios inside of a gba? It's practically identical to the bios in a gbc, I'd presume, aside from a single bit... I don't think anyone's bothered to dump it... gba mode is already done without needing any kind of bios.

Nope ..I was just not sure if the "GBC on GBA" option uses gba bios code or not...

But I was just saying to dracorex that the gba mode on this emu doesn't add a option to swipe custom palettes for GB games, as in gbc mode ( I guess he wanted a colorized GB game, with the little color changes that a gba would make to palettes?)
Even though, I don't see the need for it ..gbc mode works fine for gb colorizations..

gba mode is identical to gbc mode. Except that a bit in register B is set, and some games react to this. That is all.

I've tried every combination I can think of, M2 is still black and white. Other games like kirby 2 show in color...
