Staff edit- source, general background on the game, general background on the franchise, general background on the surrounding drama with this game... no?
Guess we will do it then.

Rayman is a fairly old (1995 was the first entry) series of platform games from Ubisoft and though it has seen a few spinoffs it has remained true to its 2d platform roots. 2011's Rayman Origins title was considered one of the best such games in years and for many it even eclipsed Nintendo's efforts to get back on the 2d platform games with the New Super Mario Brother series. Rayman Legends was set to be the sequel and was also set to be a Wii U exclusive and launch title, the launch title thing got pushed and shortly after the release of a demo it was pulled and announced as coming to the Wii U, xbox 360 and PS3 (presumably with PC and whatever else coming later too).
This delay and loss of exclusivity caused much pointless wailing on the part of many looking forward to the game and though a rough date was announced there (late September and just after the new Grand Theft Auto) it has now been changed to the 27th of August *update* 3rd of July in North America and the 30th of August for all platforms.

I'm pleased we're getting this game so soon. I had previously thought Rayman Legends wouldn't see the light of day until Winter 2013 or early 2014 due to the delays but thank goodness I was wrong.

Definitely a day one purchase for me.

There was an update on the source, they were wrong and America gets the game on the 3rd of September while Europe gets it on the 30th August.

Playing the Rayman Legends Challenges app gave me a new appreciation for the Murphy levels. I mean, tapping in a pseudo-platforming style is okay but it's actually quite fun when you're competing against others on leaderboards to see who travels the farthest with the character auto-running.

Is it just me or are we gamers a fickle, whiny, and impatient bunch?

Justified when companies fuck with us like Ubisoft did. All consumers complain when a product or service is to be delivered on a confirmed day and then two weeks prior they change it. I work in a service industry for automotive manufacturing, people have no idea how much it pisses off our customers when our products are late for delivery because it's ultimately costing them money and impacts our bottom line.

Alright, except...

1) "Fuck with us." Really, dude? I'm thinking your standard for getting fucked with must be pretty low for this to even register. Seriously, it's a delay; I'd call it a minor inconvenience, but in the grand scheme of things, that's an egregious overstatement. Maybe simmer down a bit?
2) Ubisoft owes you nothing until you purchase the product. You wanting something isn't a sacred contract they're obligating to uphold.
3) That comparison is kind of horrendous. A tid bit, at least. A car is, for many owners, a necessity. Without it, people cannot go about their lives. Rayman Legends, on the other hand, is a video game. It is a piece of entertainment and nothing else (as entertaining as it may be). You're comparing apples and jelly beans here, and it just doesn't work.

(Also, I'm guessing what you manufacture goes through businesses first, right? Like you produce the parts and sell them to shops? Because if this is the case, then you'd also likely have explicit agreements in writing about delivering your products, right? No such thing exists between game publisher and customer - not even close.)

Of all the things to be indignant about, this is so laughably minor it's absurd. Delays happen, and while this is a particularly annoying one, is a few months really so horrible? Besides, the dev team is expanding on the game with extra levels, and they're practically throwing goodies at Wii U owners. Yeah, we have to wait a little bit, but it looks like we're getting a better game out of the deal. Patience pays off - they don't call it "pay-tience" for nothing.

If the game is fully paid for by a customer, do they not have a right to complain if their product is not released by the deadline that the developer is supposed to have the game out the door and on store shelves by?

Also, as you say delays happen, in my industry delays happen because of design problems with our products, so we don't ship non conforming equipment to our customers, who happen to be manufacturing facilities that provide components to automotive companies, not getting our product out on time causes our customers to lose money for the manufacturers that they are making components for. For video games, a delay generally has meant in the past that the game was incomplete or still had bugs that were caught in QA testing, in the case of Rayman Legends, it was an attempt to make more money. So it's kind of an inverse of what I do if you really think about it. I can understand Ubisoft wanting to make more money, especially with the high cost of developing a game these days, but the way they went about it after already having the game delayed once was fairly dickish. At the same time they are probably losing money not having their game on the market right now. Had they made the decision to port the game in say, December, I don't think Wii U owners would have been as pissed off about it as we were, and the game would probably be coming out in late May or early June rather then August.

Developer =/= Publisher.

The developers are the ones getting screwed the most here.
