Got both, and quiet impressed with the Wii U one. The graphics are perfect, the use of the Wii U gamepad is brilliant, but the sound...Wow. Sounds amazing in 5.1 Lpcm, glad I preordered.

I just tried out the Wii U version as a newcomer to the series. Even as a JRPG fan, I didn't really enjoy it personally and I didn't get the appeal of it either.

You shold probably look up gameplay videos. I remmeber when i started the game like 3 years ago i tried to just attack the monsters and i ate sh*t every time. It has to do with learning how they move and when its ok to attack. A big nono is having your weapon unsheated all the time. this is what most beginners do. For god sakes this is what a "veteran" ign tester was doing, while getting his arse kicked. I just loled and closed the video. I might go buy a Wii U now lol

Yeah that was my first approach, to just go in swinging but that quickly ended in death, my second turn was more tactful with rolling out of the way of attacks and sheathing my weapon to heal until I won.

What I just didn't like, or rather found unnecessary, was how the monster roams around between the different areas after you have done a certain amount of damage to it and would seemed to be healed (it was no longer falling over after attacking, when it was 5 seconds ago), and just how long the battle took. I didn't feel like there was any threat from it once I worked out the mechanics, it was just dodge and attack for 10 mins until it went down and by that time I was just glad it was over.

Maybe there's something I'm missing, but that was just my personal opinion of it.

I can imagine some exaggeration if newcomers to the series decided to grab "the big sword" and felt super slow. That's kind of the point, it's the slowest, but has more power behind each hit. Faster weapons like dual blades hit a lot of times in quick motions, but do less damage with each hit.

The camera controls though, that's completely agreeable even to a self proclaimed MH veteran like myself. (playing MH since PS2 here)
For me it was the running speed and loading screens that I couldn't get over, and well, the visuals are really bland and washed out.
Looking forward to MH4 though, no constant loading screens, more colorful, faster, more emphasis on climbing and platforming, it seems like they really improved everything with it. Watched the latest direct trailer a couple of times now it's great, they've come a long way since the first teaser.

what this demo doesn't show to monster hunter newcomers is how much more there is to it than just killing monsters though.
Of course if you're going to get a game where the game's goal is about killling a big thing, the game isn't going to make it easy for you. The monsters have their own behavioral patterns, attack routines, and defensive routines. The monster you were hunting didn't heal. It was stumbling over first because it was out of stamina, when it left it went to eat something to regain it's stamina that's why when you met back up with it, it wasn't falling over any more. Every monster is different. Some even call reinforcements. The Qurupeco as an example can mimic other monsters' calls. Imagine hunting this big bird then all of a sudden it makes a crazy sound, and out of the blue a big ass dragon shows up too. I call it a challenge.
also the weapons that the demo gives you are topish tear weapons which make it a lot easier to kill said monsters. you don't start with those in the game, you have to work your way up to them and it takes a lot of work. Same for the armor.

Killing a monster isn't just about killing it though. all monsters have parts of their body that are breakable, you just have to focus on attacking that area to break it. Heads, wings, legs, horns, tails all can be broken. THe tail even physically gets cut off and you can carve the tail itself for parts. This is necessary to receive specific parts to create certain items.
Also to get the maximum reward after a quest, it is always best to not kill the monster at all. Instead attack it to the point that it's limping really bad, then capture it with a trap.
The weapon branching system is ridiculously huge. so many different types of weapons to make with different stats, and of course you have mining, fishing, and gathering from the wild. All the random stuff you get combines to create a LOT of varied items that you use to aid you in the hunt. Another thing they removed in the demo is the weather and how it affects your status. For example in the full game the map that you hunt lagombi (the frozen tundra), you normally would need to drink a hot drink otherwise the cold affects your stamina and makes that yellow bar get shorter faster (some armors are made to tollerate the cold though). Obviously you have to combine items to make hot drinks. In the hot areas you would need a cold drink.
There is also a skill system that is based around what type of armor you are wearing. Each armor piece gives you a certain amount of points towards whatever skill the armor supports, in order to active the skills you have to have 10 points attributed to said skill. Armor sets are great but you can also customize what skills you want by mixing and matching different armor pieces to get to that +10. Weapons and armors can also have gem slots which give you even more stat boosts or skills when you equip certain gemstones in them.
Again the game isn't for everyone, but there's so much more to this game that the demo makes out to be it's ridiculous.

Eerpow, I'm also looking forward to monster hunter 4, but there's no info on if capcom is actually going to release it here in the US. My thoughts are that if 3 ultimate flops and not many copies are sold, they won't bring 4 over here. The MH community here in the us isn't close to what it is over there. Although Im pretty sure the loading screens will still be there as the map system has always been the same for monster hunter. I do like the climbing emphasis though. and yes it does look pretty, but IMO the 3ds mh3 looks pretty damn good too for a 3ds game. As much as I like the wiiu version though with all it's hd prettyness, I feel like it could have looked a lot better too. To me it looks like they didn't push the full potential of the Wiiu.

but yeah in the end monster hunter isn't for everyone. it can be frustrating when you are trying to learn how everything works. I personally love the game and the mechanics. and the fact that there's no real story just pure game.

I've started playing the MH series on the PSP, then on the Wii and I think the 3DS is better. I don't think it's clunky though. I'd really love the check out the Wii U version if I have one. I was really hoping the demo would've supported CPP. Oh well, I guess I'm just gonna have to do it in the retail. haha.

I've tried the demo two days ago and... what's wrong with the text? It's so BLURRY, it hurts on the eyes to read it. Maybe it's because I'm not a 3DS XL? I dunno.

I'll try it later with the CPP, can't say that I'm a fan of the Lock-On. While it does work, it's never as precise as the good ol' CLAW was on the PSP (even if it HURTS after a while)... I hope that it's better with the CPP.

I'm also now wanting to play the WiiU version (Tri on the Wii was pretty much awseome).

You know what, I've actually changed my mind about this game. The lock feature works great for me, it only turns the camera to face the monster, and doesn't actually lock on so this isn't another casualization treatment like a lot of games have gotten lately. (SMT IV has ability to save everywhere, EO IV has casual, FE:13 has casual)

I tried the switchaxe first because I loved it on Monster Hunter Tri for the wii, and I didn't know about the lock function. Hated the experience with the d-pad/touch screen d-pad and thought I was going to pass. Tried the demo again and killed the "easy" beast quickly with the dual blades after learning of the camera lock.

I'll probably be buying this now. More sales = MH4 localization hopefully, so there's that too.

I rather buy 4:

"Capcom has shared details on additional weapons that will be included in Monster Hunter 4.[4] A new weapon called sōchūkon (操虫棍?) "Operating Insect Rod" is a double-ended staff capable of quick fluid attacks like the Long Sword, which is also capable of summoning a large Neopteron that will drain energy from monsters to boost the Hunter (in terms of attack, health, speed or defense). The weapon also feature commanding a ryōchū (猟虫?) "hunting insect" to get power ups from other monsters. To use this new hunting companion, you mark a target monster. Release the insect, and it will head out to the monster and suck up its energy. Call the insect back, and you'll be able to use its bounty to strengthen your character. The "energy" the insect sucks up is called "EX" (or possibly EXE). The property it strengthens is indicated by its color. White increases your speed. Red increases your attack strength. Green increases your vitality. Orange increases your defensive strength. The hunting insects are capable of jumping, so they may be able to reach areas that aren't accessible by you.

Another new weapon is the Charge Axe, that works similarly to the Switch Axe in Monster Hunter Tri. In Sword Mode it works like the Sword and Shield, while also collecting energy with each hit, that can be released in a powerful charge attack. In Axe mode the weapon gains reach, power and the ability to stun enemies at the cost of the shield and the speed in Sword Mode."

Finally some power-ups being added to the series. And environment involvement. This is enough for me to jump on board. Cause the game will no longer be a generic hack, slash and run away snooze-fest.

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
