They are in production now. They'll have a Suv model in 2014. I'm getting one next year.
Everything you know about the car ... throw it out of the window.
Get this: The only reason you need to go to the mechanic is for Software Updates ! Software Fricking Updates on a car. :)

So wait is this car completely silent?
Yes. :)
That's one of the questions i had for the salesman. Told him - can you turn this on? He said - It's on ! Me - What do you mean it's on? Can i drive this right now? Yes - he said. :)

I'm telling you, everything you know about the car throw it out the window. They'll have free supercharging stations accross USA. They have some now in California. A supercharging station would charge the whole car in 15 minutes as opposed to 4 hours in your standard house power outlet.

And how exactly do you plan on paying for one? The cheapest Tesla car starts at 50,000 for the base loadout of the Model S, and that comes with the 160 miles per charge 40kWh battery, the 85 adds another 20,000 onto the price tag, but increases the range to 300 miles.

Also, I have had my hands on Tesla components for their cars, suffice to say they are weird designs but they are lightweight since they are made of aluminum and a lot are fairly hollow without the components in them. I have done some projects for Tesla at work in the last couple of months, and have a couple more coming up, mainly for their torque boxes for both the Roadster and the Model S, we make machining fixtures and the ones we have made are going directly to Tesla themselves, rather then one of our other facilities.

I wish my credit limit were that high! Still though, if I had a considerably higher paying job, I'd probably drop the money down on a Tesla Roadster in a heartbeat, maybe in another 5 years or so when I have finished upgrading my education level and am making considerably better money, maybe I will get a Tesla.

For all intents and purposes...

10. Electric motors do emit sound. It's obviously not nearly as loud as a conventional engine, however they are not entirely silent.
9. You should be able to have a look at the motor, actually. There's no reason why you shouldn't - it requires maintenance, afterall. In case of motor winding damage, one should be able to remove the motor and re-wind it, not to mention that the motor needs air circulation, so it has to be within an open space.
7. Perhaps electricity milage would be a better term, but hey! It still applies!
6. Electric cars do have transmission mechanics and do need a certain degree of fluid.
5. See point 10.
3. Why not? It's entirely possible to use a gearbox regardless of whether you use an engine or a motor - it's a matter of preference.
2. Where's the plug/connector?
1. A valid question, you can in fact modify a variety of an electric car's parameters, even today.

//Party Pooper.

...and for those who cannot afford the Tesla, a whole lot of mechanics have been and still do convert ordinary cars into full EV's, and it's only getting easier and easier as batteries get smaller and their capacity increases. At the end of the day, you really only replace the engine with the motor and supply electricity to it - the rest of the overall built remains the same, and with the convenience of small Li-Ion cells that can be "stuffed" just about anywhere in the car, it's not as crude as one may think.

Benefits? Much cheaper driving. 100km = aprox. $1.

I dont get electric cars yet. Sure you dont use gas, but whats the efficiency? I mean for one, sure you arent filling up on gas, but that energy has to come from somewhere. The electric company is burning coal (well not anymore cause Obama doesn't think coal is a good idea), and it has to get to you somehow losing lots of the efficiency. And just a tiny caveat, at least a gas car can take heat right off the engine to keep you warm in the cold weather.

And disposal of the GIANT battery? :(

Oh and LOL at the Roadster driving in front of all those "energy efficient" windmills lol

The car LOOKS totally awesome, btw. I am all for moving into the future, but electric isnt where it needs to be right now. This car will never pay itself off, especially with the horrific $50,000 pricetag.

"300 miles per charge" this is just what I need to know. My car do (suffering on 3,000 RPM) around 430 miles with full tank. I live in a huge country but even here 300 miles is much more than almost every driver travel in on day so they are near perfection. (looking at my car usage, the ideal number is around 370 miles at 75mph).
