3DS or 3DS XL

Yeah... And the XL has better stylus placement. I just hope the jaggies aren't THAT noticeable. Well, then again, the PSP had its fair share of jagged lines, and that never seemed to bother me too much.
Not to mention the XL comes out of the box with a 4GB SD card so I can download titles from the eShop (I am already looking forward to Liberation Maiden and Denpa Men). Hmm.
And if what you say is true that the size difference isn't that bad, then I suppose I'll just go ahead with the XL. I do prefer the curved edges a lot more than the square ones (I tried out a Target demo unit).

I just hope that Nintendo America brings the white model to the states by Christmas. It is just too sexy.
The jaggies really aren't more noticeable, at least to me. And games like Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Kid Icarus: Uprising look ESPECIALLY pretty on the larger screen.

I am myseld satisfied with the small 3DS, I've even developed some ways to hold the 3ds for more comfort. But since I play a lot of 2d games, I think the 3ds XL would be better for me because of better d-pad and the fact that 2d games tend to have small characters which, to be honest, is tiring my view. (Damn you, Cave Story and your small sprites!)

Wait.... So the damned screen scratching still exists? Even with the modified bumbers and other "additions"? Hrm.

Yes for the newer 3DS's and the XLs still scratch under normal use. That's why I say just get a screen protector for at least the top screen of either system. Cheaper to replace a screen protector, you know?

Yeah, I suppose I will have to invest in screen protectors. That kinda sucks though. I was imagining that since they revised the system, they would just fix the whole scratching issue. But noooo. Is it as bad as it was with the normal 3DS?

And that's why I hate you America!!! :P

I am sad to live here... If I decide upon the XL, it would just make my day if Nintendo announced a bundle that brought the white model to the states. Reggie said it would be possible but as a limited thing or as a packaged deal.

<3 Cave Story is the best! Yeah, I played NSMB2 on the Target Demo unit and the graphics were pretty nice as a sudo 2.5D game. I only wish the demo unit had more games on it so I could see games other than just NSMB2 and Super Mario Tennis. KH3D would be great to see, but whatevs, Nintendo. Whatevs.

Would anyone like to elaborate on this D-Pad change? Is the d-pad itself changed somehow, or are you referring to the new placement of it?

The dPad is in the same position. It's just the material and feel of it is a billion time better. The dPad on the original 3DS felt hard, sharp, overclicky, overstiff, and borderline painful to use. It's without a doubt the worst Nintendo dpad I've ever used, along with the one on the GameCube. Meanwhile, the dPad on the 3DS XL feels more natural, less stuff, and not painful to use at all.

The 3DS XL screen scratching? It's not nearly as fast as the original 3DS, but it has the potential for being MUCH worse. With the original 3DS, only two thin portions of the bottom screen frame touched the top screen. With the XL, the entire sides of the bottom screen frame touches.

Much more surface area, many more chances for dust to grind into the top screen over time. Yes, I do have experience with this first hand. No, I wasn't abusing my XL. I put it under normal use that a portable game console would go through. Putting it in my pocket for example. If that's abusing it, then what the heck should the 3DS be classified as?

I have to agree, the GameCube one was absolute shit. If the 3DS one is even half as bad, I would have to just get the XL.

Oh, god. The entire thing can be etched into the top? Shit, nintendo.
Hm... This is making my decision even harder. Go with the 3DS and have a crappy D-Pad but less screen scratches, or go with the XL and have a better D-Pad with the greater likelihood of the entire top screen getting scuffed up. Nintendo sure doesn't make it easy.

They seriously should start shipping all 3DS models with screen protectors built in if they can't get their crap together regarding this. no joke.

I mean, it's a different kind of "bad" from the GameCube dPad. The GameCube dPad was ok as far as natural feel, etc, was, but it was too small. The 3DS dPad is just downright painful to use and feels like it's going to break any second whenever you press it.

Both systems will get scratches. but the original will get them much easier. You're going to have to get screen protectors either way, so i personally don't think you should factor that into your decision between the two.

Edit: Shoot, I forgot post auto-merge is broken. Sorry!

I make it sound like it's way worse then the original 3DS. If you catch it early, it's not. I've been using my XL the day it came out and only within the past week was able to get a screen protector on it. The scratches are there and permanent on the top screen, but it's not even close to the level of scratching the original 3DS would get in the same time frame. Not to mention they're really only visible when under direct light or when the game is letter boxed, aka DS/DSi games.

It would have gotten way worse if I let it go for like... a year or so.

Moral of the story? Yes, Nintendo should just have a screen protector applied to the 3DS as soon as you get it. No other system that I can think of has a wide screen touching a smaller screen when not in use, so I don't think anyone was expecting this problem.

I have a small doubt about the sound. The 3DS XL has smaller speakers than the regular 3DS, I read this at the 3DS XL's Iwata asks that the XL, it also said that the XL's speakers are retangular shaped while the normal 3DS has round speakers. Did anyone notice a difference in the sound between them? (Is the volume higher, lower? Do the lower frequencies sound as good as the normal 3ds?) I know most people don't care about this, but I'm a musician and I kind of care about these details. ^_^

How do you NOT think of that though? It sounds like the most obvious problem in the world, to me. Even when I first got mine, i sort of wondered "wow, can't there be damage with those borders touching the screen?" I didn't even know about the issue at the time.

I have both systems, and the XL's speakers sound great, to me. The sound is definitely louder, and the quality isn't noticeably less, to me.

Yeah. And I did see online how the XL scratches are akin to little dots at first. I suppose as long as I get some screen guards from the get go, I'll probably be fine.

It seems that everything about the XL is better than the original 3DS. Great, now I feel bad for buying my 3ds so soon... :hateit:

I know, right? Either that, or why doesn't nintendo just get rid of the whole raised bottom screen thing? Wouldn't that save some tears cried over scratched screens? Meh. I dunno, I guess it would be just a money saver for them to just keep things the way they are.

My only bitch about the different models of the DS and 3DS line is the fact that nearly every model changes the power button, volume rocker and stylus. The DSi has some really nice buttons on the side to change the volume, but the 3DS and 3DSXL have sliders (which I despise...). Normal DS, DSi line and 3DS line all have power buttons while the lite has a switch similar to the PSP. Normal DS and normal 3DS have short styluses in the back/top of the device while every other system has longer, plastic ones placed on the right side of the device.

Its just stupid sometimes.

I guess the DSi's volume buttons are nice, but I hated the fact that it didn't have many levels of volume to choose from. (although I loved how you could use them to change the brightness during the game).
