So... I'm in the Boston area, and have picked up, maybe like 6 people total over a month (I'm actually outside the city)...
but now I'm in NYC and I went to a kid Icarus event at the NintendoWorld store, it was nuts, I picked up like 30+ people and my kid icarus got crazy amount of gems, my other games got things too...

let's be honest, it makes me carry my 3DS more when I go out...

but I wonder if Nintendo could have done an alternate implementation. Instead of always being console to console, I was hoping it could do this:

Send your location over spotpass (aka wifi) and your goodies you have to share
Nintendo holds your location say 24h? If another 3DS passes by your same location w/in that timeframe, it counts.

They could even make it count "less", like that would give you a "you met XYZ's ghost" or something...

Take the metro in Boston--you'll get hits on pretty much every trip. (At least I have.)

I'm an American ex-pat living in Tokyo. For me, a trip to work or a trip to the in-laws or a trip basically anywhere on the train or subway very easily fills up my maximum 10 hits with new contacts. I have over 1000 at this point, and I don't very often take my 3DS out with me.

I'm on a rare trip home to the US now, and I got all of one hit during my four-hour layover in San Francisco, nothing in the Chicago Airport, nothing in Atlanta. Needless to say, no hits in semi-rural Georgia.

So is Street Pass pretty useless for most people?

For me, yeah pretty much. Very frustrating that Nintendo put those purple pieces in some of the puzzles that can only be obtained via streetpass. I've had my 3DS since just after launch and have gotten less than a dozen distinct streetpass connections.

I lived in Japan for a couple years in the 90's ... I often think about how great the streetpass thing must be there. You confirmed my suspicions, you bastard. :P

I just came back from Tokyo today after a week there. Had 5 streetpass hits before this from the US, came back with 500.

I still want to know why sometimes when I have multiple 3DS units in my bag only one will get a streetpass hit. Or, all but one. Happened yesterday when I went to Gamestop for a Pokemon download.

I work at a college campus, and am lucky to get one per MONTH. Thousands of students all around me throughout a month, none of em w/ streetpass :/

What's worse is sometimes I see people playing their 3DS in public, but I can't just ask them to go into sleep mode to tag..
But they don't have to be in sleep mode to tag.
In my experience, you do.
Isn't it odd that I've been tagged when not in sleep mode?
It is, yeah. I've tried with a friend but it wouldn't streetpass when we were playing games.
Yeah, in-game it most likely wouldn't work.
Especially in DS(i) titles.

Not counting 7 StreetPasses with a creepy guy who occasionally passes by my house, I've only gotten two. (One British dude and a Finnish guy in Stockholm.)
