Maybe we should have a poll about it? How many people think that developers should not be questioned because they think that criticism might lead the developer to stop working on a program that they personally want to use? I'll bet that the results might be surprising, that is if people were honest in answering the poll. People act in self-interested ways all of the time, probably much more so than for altruistic reasons. But that is not the sole reason. Some people like to be bullies, perhaps because they think that it is fun to beat up on other people, figuratively or literally. Perhaps it gives them a sense of power or superiority, some sort of increase in social capital. Others seem to like to join in on the "fun". Personally, I don't see the enjoyment in it. I find it perverse and childish.
When people say things like "Devolution won't let me play my games", what they actually mean is something more along the lines of "Of course I can still play my games from disc, but Devolution won't let me play the games I want to play because I don't have the retail discs for those games". I seriously doubt that anyone here has actually meant that the program somehow stopped their Wii from reading/loading/playing games from disc. That fact ought to be assumed by the reader (at least any reader who cares to understand what was actually meant by the speaker). The problem occurs when others selectively read such posts with the intent of dismissing them rather than actually reading between the lines and making the necessary inferences (like that people are not saying that their Wii cannot play games on disc because of Devolution). Then again, the norm around here seems to be to strategically mock, belittle, and marginalize rather than to make a genuine attempt at understanding.
