The Vita is overpowered for a handheld and that's a negative point. It's the same problem the PSP had - devs can just lazily ship a stripped down version of a home console game rather than making a game from the ground up that's actually designed as a good handheld game. People don't want to play lite versions of the same games they've got at home on the bus, on a tiny screen without multiplayer. They want a totally different, hand-held specific experience.

Sony isn't going to get anywhere in the handheld market until it realises that handheld gaming isn't just about putting a console in your pocket. If it's not MORE powerful than contemporary home consoles, is throwing processing power at it really that much of a selling point?

PS3 and X360 are from 2006 and 2005,
it's normal for them to be outdated now.

PSVita and 3DS were almost simultaneous released,
there is no excuse for 3DS to be a lot inferior in graphics.

3DS was released for $250 and it's production cost is $103.
But even at their release, the capabilities of gaming PCs were much greater.

No they weren't
6 years ago, have you seen a octo-core at that time?
PS3 had tons of features PCs at that time didn't have.

While PC games retained themselves on DVDs, PS3 used Blu-Ray and was capable of 50GB storage,
and it was used in Metal Gear Solid 4.

If you get a PC from 3 years ago it won't run Crysis as smooth as PS3 runs

I think graphics matter, that's why I love my 3DS.
Current handleheld gen: PSVita and 3DS
Graphics: PSVita > 3DS
then your argument is invalid
I'll agree that the graphics Vita is capable to produce are far superior to those the 3DS is capable to produce, but I don't think that it automatically disqualifies the 3DS. The PSP was also far superior to the DS hardware-wise in every possible way apart from the lack of a touchscreen and hey! They both had good libraries and both are worth purchasing.

On one hand, it's a good thing that we have this gap between the systems since it basically guarantees that the two libraries will be different and we won't see a whole lot of cross-platform games, and if we will, the versions will obviously differ from one another.

On the other hand though, I expected a tad more from Nintendo. The hardware's not bad, but it's not spectacular either. The Vita is a behemot, perhaps even an overkill for today's standards. The 3DS was made to be the console of Today, the Vita was made to be the console of the future, and you can see that when looking at the specs sheets of the devices.

In the end of the day, it's a matter of taste, but what I'm trying to say is that what Vita is great and the hardware will be able to support future, more resource-monging engines. The 3DS is "sufficient", but I fear that sometime down the line cuts will have to be made - but that's the far future. As of today, both systems have acceptable graphics and processing capabilities. Neither deserves bashing. By the time the Vita ages and reaches its full potential, Nintendo will have a 3DSi up their sleeves already - we all know that.

Isn't that up to the developer though? Lazy developers will be lazy regardless of resources at hand. Moreover, the PSP's library hardly consists of watered-down ports.

There is nothing cooler than "taking your game outside" - I think that having a "Lite" version of the experience that you can take outside is not a bad idea at all, as long as transfering saves works, and the Cloud and console connectivity helps with that. There is nothing more annoying than having to stop playing a home console game because you need to go somewhere when you're close to reaching a breakthrough in the storyline or another kind of a milestone - the technology is now here to prevent that. You can take your game with you - hell, the handheld can improve it with new content thanks to the touchscreen or other special handheld-specific hardware. I think that those "Save Sharing" games should be sold in bundles as well as separately for owners of both consoles - that kind of gameplay should be encouraged.

gamefreakjf11, people saying 3DS games look like crap wasn't directed to you. What I mean with the Vita being ahead its time is, that because of its power it is simply too expensive. I think no hand-held will ever sell well at 250$, even the 3DS. So having a powerful hand-held (or console) is a design choice. It's about the ballance between processing power and prize, not which company has more "muscules" to built the better system. At the end the games make the system (just look at PS2, the weakest of the three).
Seriously, 3DS games look good enough and there's no need to constantly reduce it to its weak hardware. The same goes for the Vita. There's no need to constantly pick on it for not selling to good atm.

I'm not saying PSVita's hardware disqualifies 3DS.
But he said he liked 3DS because he likes hardware.
For me it's like saying you love McDonalds because you love their salad.

It's contraditory, don't you agree?

I've completed Episode 1 on my Wii and tried out a bit of Episode 2 on the tablet (not extensively thanks to the shit framerate because of the Tegra 2). I guess I didn't have a good enough look at the second episode. A more apt comparison would be Super Mario Galaxy to Super Mario Galaxy 2. No one complained about minimal changes to the visuals in that.

I think the game still offers substantial enough improvements. The coin gimmick seems pretty fun as well as Coin Rush mode (1 life, speed run, timelimit, three levels). It's also been said to have exceptional level design and however minor, the backgrounds actually change from day to night..

I'm not going to go as far to claim that they rehashed assets as Mario and other characters are remade models (more polygons). It's just the result of the visual style Nintendo is going for. Personally, I think it's stale but I wouldn't count it as a negative against the game. It still has stellar level-design and some other additional features which is all I really want from a 2D Mario game.

3DS graphics are similar to PSP graphics, that was released in 2004

So indeed 3DS graphics are bad for today
What the hell are you smoking? 3DS is significantly better than the PSP (it's using hardware from 2008/9) and it shows.

I'll concede that isn't as powerful as the Vita but to go as far and claim it's the same as the PSP is silly. Have fun running Revelations on a PSP.

Stop spouting bullshit if you don't know what you're talking about. The PS3 did not outperform high-end PCs at launch.

Back then (2006/7), you could have got a nice Quad Core CPU and a 8800GT and have that crush the PS360. Oh and sure the PS3 runs Crysis smooth if you like 15FPS drops, sub-HD resolution and no AA or AF.

Bluestar is right in that the Vita's power isn't doing it any favours right now. Sony can't lower the price on the console (to help it sell) without selling it at a large loss.

"Taking the game outside" is a silly idea considering you have to buy a $250 portable in addition to your PS3 as well as a separate version of the game (if it isn't made by Sony). And that's for an inferior version to the console.

I like the idea of being able to play anywhere in my house but I don't think the Vita suits that need properly. Part of why I'm excited for the Wii U is the off-TV play.

I'm really excited for the UK midnight launch of NSMB2:

1/ The midnight launch of NSMB2 on the eShop for the UK, is 7am in the morning for me (I live in Australia) .

2/ And not only do I get the game 1 day in advance, I get $10AUD off the Australian RRP, because I'm using a UK eShop account.

3/ I've also pre-downloaded the game files from Nintendo's CDN, and set up a proxy server so it downloads from my computer. Avoiding the inevitable slow download speeds resulting from everyone downloading it at once.
Downloading the files from Nintendo's CDN? What do you mean? Surely that makes the download quicker, so it would be nice if I could learn your secrets. :-)
Although I doubt this game will be very big....
When the EUR game rom for NSMB2 was dumped, it let me see the game's titleID. I can use that titleID to obtain the eShop data for the game, before the game is made available for download.
The links to the game data(for EUR):
http://nus.cdn.c.sho...07AF00/00000000 (~330mb)
http://nus.cdn.c.sho...07AF00/00000001 (`3mb)

EDIT: Not much time now X)

Aaaaand the download is LIVE!

It's a pretty slow download, the animation is only dropping one cube at a time, two if I'm lucky.
Must be a lot of other people also downloading.

Downloading since I saved £20 on eShop cards, plus the 500 points I earn gives me the 5000 I need for a Mario Kart 7 Trophy. :D

I said similar not the same and indeed they are similar.
Name 10 3DS games with better graphics than these showed

Crysis 2 runs that way,
Crysis 1 runs better than in a PS3 than a PC with same specs, due to using Crisys 2 engine, serious optimizations and other stuff.

You could have a quad-core but PS3 used a octo-core, that was indeed more powerful

Similar, they are not. PSP games are plagued with dithering, no AA and low poly models (good for its time but not now). It's essentially a PS1.5 while the 3DS is a Gamecube+.

Showing me a shitty video with bullshots (bullvideos?) doesn't prove anything. List some games to prove your point. I've already mentioned Revelations, a game that the PSP couldn't dream of running.

Crysis on the consoles is shit (it drops to 12FPS). Better than a PC with same specs? What's your point exactly?
http://www.eurogamer...crysis-face-off

Crysis 2 is a moot point since it was built with consoles in my mind. On the PC, Crysis 2 on max is actually worse than Crysis.

Comparing the PS3 CPU to x86 CPUs on the PC is like comparing apples and oranges. They use different architectures and are quite different from each other.

The download's slow because of the the Nintendo servers?

Sorry, but I thought this thread was about New Super Mario Bros 2, not about debating the power of game consoles.

How much moolah are we talking here guys? I would be tempted to buy it tonight but honestly, i wouldn't even think about it if it costs more than 25 euro. Buying it digitally means no physical box or anything, and you couldn't sell it on later. It's sick how much cheaper downloadable games are selling for on other devices. A missed oppurtunity if nintendo take the piss out of their fans once again...

It costs £39.99, unfortunately, which I imagine will end up being €49.99.

Yeah, you wanna go get the retail version. The only reason I'm even getting the download version is because I saved big on eShop cards thanks to the GAME reward scheme after buying a 3DS XL.
That, and the double reward stars.
