Wait, why are you talking about Zelda in a Mario hype thread >_>

and "Nothing but stupid and useless variations." cant the same be said for zelda? but still, that sells great too.

Just to show the graphical advance from Zelda tiltles
compared to the graphical advance of Mario titles.

If you see the old posts you will understand

I made a comparison a page or 2 back about how, since Zelda has been so adventurous with a different graphic style with every 3D console game (except between OoT and MM), why can't Mario be similarly adventurous? Only times they have been really are in Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi series.

...I don't see a good reason to get all hyped up. It took them 6 years to improve... nothing? This game could just as well be a DS, or more likely, a DSi title, I really don't see any redeeming qualities that could justify a 3DS-Only release other than "we need to sell even more 3DS's". Don't get me wrong now, I loved New Super Mario Bros. - mostly for its multiplayer mode. There was a guilty satisfaction in pushing friends into bottolmess pits or enemies, but for a 3DS release, this just isn't a "step up" I expected after 6 years.
Do you want to know a good reason to get hyped up? New levels and gameplay. That's all that matters.

While I don't approve of Nintendo's lack of innovation with regards to the art-style in the NSMB series, it's silly to count the game out because of that. It's a platformer and people play it for new levels and new gameplay elements which this game fullfills perfectly. Is Sonic 4: Episode 2 not a worthy step-up over Sonic 4: Episode 1 because it features the same art-style?

I have two problems with your argument. Firstly, have you played Episode 1 at all?

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 2:

I mean, where do I start? Don't you see the obvious differences between the two? Episode 1 was composed of pre-rendered environments and sprites - Episode 2's 3D and it shows. Moreover, Episode 1 levels seemed flat at times, even though it did introduce some interaction with the environment in 3D space. This screenshot of Episode 2 shows the depth that was achieved by tilting the camera to a slight angle, taking what Episode 1 started a step further. Particle and lighting effects were also improved and all-in-all, Episode 2 looks much, much better than Episode 1. We're not all about the looks though, are we? It re-introduced the loved-by-all Special Zone, so that needs mentioning as well. It's a good follow-up that indeed doesn't sacrifice the art style, but improves upon a good example.

Secondly, Sonic 4: Episode 1 and Episode 2 are multiplatform minigames - they're not considered "full releases" and some cuts are made for compatibility's sake. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is for a single platform allowing more polishing that's somehow absent, and as I said earlier, looks like a DSiWare/3DSWare title... but it's not. It's going to be sold as a full-priced game - that makes a big difference.

NSMB2 looks incredibly stale - its idea of innovation is adding more coins, that's not something you'd expect from that caliber of a franchise, but hey! As I said, the gameplay was good in NSMB, it probably will be in NSMB2. I just expected something "fresher".

Just thought id let people know the Game will update your console to 4.1.0-8 if not already on the latest

:D

you do realize the current firmware is at 4.3.0-10, right?

lol (runs the thread about updates if you didnt notice)

some people haven't updated due to there flashcards not working on higher
so as long as there card works on 4.1.0-8 the game wont update the console further

I'm really excited for the UK midnight launch of NSMB2:

1/ The midnight launch of NSMB2 on the eShop for the UK, is 7am in the morning for me (I live in Australia) .

2/ And not only do I get the game 1 day in advance, I get $10AUD off the Australian RRP, because I'm using a UK eShop account.

3/ I've also pre-downloaded the game files from Nintendo's CDN, and set up a proxy server so it downloads from my computer. Avoiding the inevitable slow download speeds resulting from everyone downloading it at once.

I like how people come up with the silliest of arguments when they realize that they're wrong and need to quickly de-rail the conversation. Let's face it - graphics do matter. They always mattered. If New Super Mario Bros. 2 looked like an Atari 2600 game, you wouldn't buy it just because it has good gameplay.

Nintendo always focused on hardware power and they always aimed at the best graphics EXCEPT for last generation. Why? Because they could not afford it after the Gamecube and Nintendo 64 fiascos that spelled losses to the company. They needed hardware that was cheap and sustainable, hardware that will quickly bring a profit, and thus the Wii and the DS were born. Perhaps out of creativity, but mostly out of necessity, Nintendo started a weird experiment where they offered "unparallel gameplay experience" - whatever that was - on inferior machines and... people bought it. They still do, they think that games are all about this so-called "gameplay". No, they're not all about it, because positive "feelings" towards a game build up from the balance of all of its qualities - sound, graphics, gameplay mechanics, aesthetics, responsiveness and so-on and so-forth.

Nintendo fanboys say that graphics don't really matter on Nintendo systems, that their first-party titles are top-notch without good graphics, but whenever an opportunity arises, what do they praise? Skyward Sword and Mario Galaxy - because "they look soooo good!". Make up your mind, what are your priorities? ;)

The NES, SNES, N64 and Game Boy were all affordable and 'underpowered' compared to some systems available in the same generation.

They succeeded in spite of their limitations in terms of power and storage because of innovative and solid game titles.

The NES had virtually no competition until the Master System came out - it single-handedly revived the industry after a wave of pseudo-computers caused it to crash. The SNES was only beaten by NEO GEO which wasn't affordable at all and far from the average Joe's reach. N64 was top-dog and ate the PlayStation for breakfast - its only "real" limitation was the cartridge slot. The GB used to be top dog, but it had an extremely long life-cycle, thus stronger machines were released along the way, in the shadows of the Boy which had an established library.

Master System was more powerful and more expensive, you've mentioned the neo geo, there's also the TG-16 CD, 3DO, CD32, CDi, Lynx, Game Gear, NGPC... And the cartridge limitation wasn't just a footnote, it severely limited what the N64 could do compared to the PSX. I think people look back at the N64 with rose coloured specs or through the lens of emulators. Those games have not aged well.

I hope you realize that at the level their discussing, they're talking about the graphics between the Wii and PS3 do not matter. They do not need or request to have something look photo realistic when the Wii can perfectly capture the cartoon and animated look of Mario perfectly for them. That's what "graphics don't matter" means. Obviously they wouldn't be comfortable with Atari 2600 style graphics.

I think graphics matter, that's why I love my 3DS.
