It's easy to criticize him. Yea he generalized a lot but here you have a guy who tries to make games and lives like poor just bring out this game and he does it to show that games can be more than just toys or silly teenager stuff. Then he sees the japanese devs coming out with silly shit like Lollipop chainsaw or "Moshi Moshi Titty Bouncy! Everyone Vagina Schoolgirl!!" of course he is mad.

That's such a bullshit counter. What do you think real game developers live off?

You're just proving my point that most North Americans treat Japanese people as sterotypes. Did you know that there are actually Japanese people who don't like RPGs? Is your mind blown yet?

But they make a lot of RPGs. An overwhelmingly large amount of them. And a lot of them fall victim to similar faults.

I certainly would never say I enjoy Japanese games over western ones. BUT THAT MAKES MY XENOPHOBIC.

Personally I think both Western and Japanese games are rather terrible. I either get a choice between shit, dark, grey and repetitive FPS and shit, dull, mediocre and repetitive JRPGs.

That's why I only play Korean games.

Games got a bit repetitive nowadays, perhaps because "everything was already tried out at some point". It's really hard to find a gem among the lumps of coal.

While I can say that "alot of Japanese productions suffer from sameness and repetitiveness, first and foremost RPG's" I wouldn't say that all of their games suck - there's plenty of'em that shine among the crowd, they're just made for a completely different audience.

If your criteria of quality are the size of the budget and professionalism and if the main rule is the less the better then I suppose you can say "all big productions suck" but that only means you're sour because the industry didn't "accept" your game as "worthy". Big kids threw you out of the sandbox, huh? They don't want to play with you? They say you're too small and they won't give you one of their buckets and rakes or shovels? Nasty kids, bullies! Let's badmouth them now, that'll show'em.

While Fez is exciting, I think dismissing an entire country's output as crappy is stupid. I hate JRPGs, I hate grinding, I hate the shitty storylines. But I love, for example, 999, Ace Attorney games and Ghost Trick, all made by japanese devs. I love Nintendo games. I love Sega games. I'm assuming he was generalising and assuming all japanese games are JRPGs, which is just plain wrong.
And I think somebody made the point earlier: this man thinks games can be an art form. (and rightly so!) When games like Lollipop Chainsaw come out of reputable Japanese devs, he's likely to get pissed, because it's undermining his point. Still doesn't get him off being xenophobic, but still.

Both sides (Eastern and Western) have their own way of doing video games, and both have flaws. in the west they usually suck when doing anything remotely cartoons, but have excellent high fantasy and modern/futuristic sci-fi games. Japan pretty much owns on the cartoon presentation (or anime), which usually works with whatever genre they decide to slap it on, but most of their best works were RPGs and games with heavy or substantial literary work put into them (Visual Novels and games of the like) and have excellent narratives.

tl;dr Western devs are good with guns and swords, Japanese devs are excellent storytellers.

however, to publicly insult a foreigner without so much as an afterthought is just... well, highly unbecoming. probably thought he's all big now since the indie film he stars in have received a standing ovation... from gamers. his game could turn out to be good, but i'd turn what he said back at him. he just sucks.
