After two decades of research, a group of Canadian scientists has won approval to start testing an experimental HIV vaccine on humans.

The vaccine, developed by researchers at the University of Western Ontario, has received a green light from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for clinical human trials.

Beginning in January, the vaccine will be given to 40 healthy people with HIV to test its safety.

Dr. Chil-Yong Kang, professor of virology at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario, called the FDA approval a “milestone.”

“We started the basic science research two decades ago,” Kang said. “The vaccine development, we started 10 years ago. This is incredible for us to get to this stage of development.”

Kang said the vaccine, called SAV001, is the first preventative HIV vaccine approved for clinical trials to use a killed whole HIV-1 virus to activate the immune response in humans.

The strategy has been used before to develop successful vaccines for influenza, polio, rabies and hepatitis A. Kang said these past successes for other viral diseases provide hope the Canadian-developed vaccine will work against HIV.

The human immunodeficiency virus used in the vaccine has been genetically altered to render it non-pathogenic, or unable to cause disease. Kang and his research team then further inactivated the virus using chemicals and radiation.

“In the past, people did not use this strategy (using a killed whole HIV virus) because people did not know how to make a safer virus and people did not know how to make large quantities of it,” Kang said. “Now we have solved those problems by the genetic engineering of the virus.”

zombies do exist.
there are "zombie fungi" which can infect small animals and insects, and take over their brain functions.
they are limited however, 1 species of zombie fungus can usually only infect 1(or very few) species of animal because of the difference in the way their brain works.
a medicine however, unless based on such a fungus, is unlikely to cause people to turn into zombies.

I am glad to see progress is finally moving along so smoothly, as well I doubt this will cause a zombie problem...at least I hope they watched enough zombie movies to know enough not to release it to the public before making countless tests.

I fail to understand how after literally thousands of years of science going on and not a single instance of a human zombie people are still treating them like creatures that actually may exist in the nearby future. Also, the fungi mentioned only STIMULATE given parts of a LIVE animal's brain to force it to do the fungi's bidding, they are not capable of sustaining life of the creature after its "departure".

As far as the vaccine is concerned, good for them - progress is always good. Not that H.I.V or A.I.D.S is a problem in the developed countries nowadays anyways, draconic medical treatments are a thing of the past and keeping A.I.D.S under wraps is a matter of a few pills daily, really.

lol more vaccine's = more people that dont care who they sleep with. great........

How is that even remotely related? If someone's being whorish and afraid of A.I.D.S, they just use a condom during each encounter. I can hardly imagine A.I.D.S as being the reason for anyone's abstinence, and I'm pretty sure that the rapid spread of the virus kinda proves my point.

if it works, i'm so glad it's from canada and not the US. US companies would probably charge a lot more and keep under-develop countries from using the vaccine.

and this is almost sorry enough for giving us biebers. HIV or Bieber?... tough choice.

the vaccine is developed by a university.
chances are, a US company is going to buy the patents and rights if this works. they'll simply outbid everything canada has to offer

That is, if the head of the research team is a *moron*. Finding a working vaccine for H.I.V is like finding a bottomless pit of gold - patenting the invention rather then selling it sounds more sensible to me and would likely provide LOTS of income for the university and the scientists.

ah, you know how these things go, either they sell it, or kang and kodos die and the whole thing gets rereleased by some us company a year later.

because really, a bottomless pit of gold is just worth all that trouble

then again, it really only would be a bottomless pot of gold, if those poorer countries where hiv is really rampaging, weren't as poor

You really under-appreciate "not having to worry about an H.I.V infection ever again when meeting a new person you'd like to sleep with". There is a market for that kind of a vaccine, and I assure you, humanitarian organizations are not 100% charities - they make income for which they buy certain medication. So yes, there is money to be made.

$50 says the conversation of the scientists when they were discussing whether or not it'd work was like "'So, how positive are you that this will work?' 'I AM HIV-POSITIVE'" I AM SO FUNNY.
[/sarcasm]

ON A MORE SERIOUS NOTE. This is pretty cool. I know a few people who might be a tad interested in this.

That Dell data breach is worse than people probably realize....

When I worked for Dell we had access to data about military contracts and addresses for high ranking people.

I personally handled a call from the second highest person at Raytheon. That call bothered me a lot... The guy was nice and smart what bothered me was the way management basically just blew him off instead of going the extra mile to help him.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
In the end that call ended up costing Dell millions in lost contracts with Raytheon, and really the issue could have been solved for like 450 bucks lol

I always thought that capcom shuffled the games in these collection, but apparently they are all in chronological order, which makes legacy collection 2 worthless
