It appears here in the UK that if you want a top level job as a code cracking spy, GCHQ have unorthadox methods of recruiting people, all you have to do is crack this code:

The code was NOT hard to solve for anyone that knows anything about cracking.
The didn't even make it where you need to solve it to see the congrats page, just click the link there, it'll think you solved it, and let you apply.
If it's not fake, something fishy's going on still, there's no way a real website wanting real crackers wouldn't make the apply/congrats page more secured.

EDIT: Finally done editing.

Go work for gchq or go work for google for 3 times the salary.

Hard choice.

Fake, i dont think so, it is a genuine recruitment drive, although it does say in the article that your code cracking background WILL be checked, alsoo if you hack the code to get the password you will be banned from taking part.

I just thought i'd post it to see if any of the code cracking community could crack this 1

As I said already, it's incredibly easy for even a novice cracker. I have absolutly no interest in working there though (not my country for one, and as pyro pointed out, horrible salary anyway), so it's fine if they ban me for linking the solved page, I don't really care.

I dunno, machine code?

I guess this would mildly entertaining to solve. I'm sure the prize of working for the GCHQ isn't really much motivation for anyone.

Edit:
Well someone solved it.

I tell this to my teachers all the time:
In the real world, it doesn't matter how I got it. All that matters is I got it.
That's so false... in the "real world", if you can't prove the method of how you got something, then your answer will be worthless.

Tell that to the people who stole all that PSN account information some months ago. No one else knows how they did it, but what they did was not at all "worthless".

How? They were running a 6-month outdated version of Apache (to allow the initial breach) and they stored passwords in plain-text. That's how.

Either way, that's hardly relevant. The PSN info is not an answer, the PSN info was the result. The question was "How to hack into Sony?" the answer being "Exploit old Apache servers." If you tried to answer the question with an unproven answer (e.g. let's throw rocks at Sony HQ until they give us passwords) then there would have been no result.

An analogue would be... let's say you're building an part. A question might be "What is the optimal volume for it to meet specification x?" the answer might be a valid number, but unless you can prove it, there will be no result (i.e. the part is complete) because building the part with an unproved answer would be a waste of time and resources, and only a fool would do it.

Same with the group of hackers. It was not a single mind who carried out the actions, but an organization. If one of the members suggested to throw rocks at Sony HQ for passwords, he would be kicked out of the group unless he had a convincing explanation.

So, if I cure cancer and not tell people HOW, I don't get credit?
Or if I was to become an assassin and was to kill someone of importance, I wouldn't get paid unless I told how I killed them?
Or if I was a carpenter and built a house in a single day, I wouldn't get paid unless I explained how?
Or if...
List goes on.

EDIT:
will be no result

I meant, does it matter how I got the result, not the answer.

You wouldn't get credit unless you proved that you can, in fact, cure cancer. (And in the "real world" its hard to prove this without basically giving away how you do it...)
You wouldn't get paid unless you proved you did, in fact, kill them
You wouldn't get hired for this stupid security position unless you proved that you can actually get the passcode

etc.

I see the point you're coming from, I really do, but you were talking about school and teachers. What they're teaching you right now is how to rationalize your answers so you can actually create "results" :)

I don't think you understand what I am saying. I am not saying that I claim to have done something. I am saying that it has been done. I have people who used to have cancer, and no longer do. I have given the corpse of the person assasinated. There is a building in front of my employer. I am not claiming to have built it, I am presenting it.

Not in math. Which is what this thread is about, essentially.

I do understand where you are coming from, but actually, it's about, more specifically, hacking/cracking.
