If you even thought it should not be okay, then don't do it?
How long do you think you have to wait until you don't feel guilty to do it?

People buy Wii and do it right away because they bought it especially to hack it.
Just ask yourself if you want it to be hacked or not, the time you need to wait has nothing to do.

I'd say don't mod your wii right away.

Instead, read all about modding your Wii right away, and grok that information until you think you know what you are doing. Then mod it. That will save you asking ridiculously simply questions, and avoid any idiot-bricks like deleting the system menu before you have a bootmii backup.

Modding your Wii is a good thing, modding your Wii when you don't have a clue what you are doing is a bad thing.

I wouldn't mod it straight away. Sure, it can be done. But why? Wiis are shipped with very fun games, so why not enjoy those first? Get used with how the wiimote works, create a few miis, invite some friends over to have fun with them (yes, those can be female...games like Kirby Epic Yarn, SMBW really attract chicks).

At the very least, I'd refrain from modding before you make sure everything works. The reason: as soon as you mod it, your warranty is void. It doesn't matter if the error had nothing to do with the hacks, nintendo will refuse to pay if they find traces of homebrew (and really: it's close to impossible to hide those traces).

Other than that, I'm with Category: just take your time to find out how hacking works on a wii before doing changes (it's kinda different than other consoles, so don't go presuming things too fast).

Really good advice, +1

There are really only four things you'd want to check - the SD slot, the GameCube memory slots, the GameCube gamepad slots and the disc drive. If all those work dandy, you're pretty much set.

I would recommend against modding your Wii altogether. It's just not worth it.
Get off this site, lol. The Wii is so much better once it's been modded. Media players, USB backups, custom channels, homebrew apps, themes, emulators, and more!
maybe he thinks modding a wii is just piracy
the wii is awesome once you mod it(as if it isn't awesome enought when it's a virgin) it becomes like the ultimate multipurpose gaming system(not graphic wise tough, that doesn't matter if you aren't a graphic whore)

i would say to take the time to learn how its supposed to work before hacking it all to bits.
for example, right out of the box, the wii will not let you copy saves for some games to the SD card. there are hacks that try to get around this, and sometime they dont always work. if you took the time to learn about these "untransferable" saves when you get your wii, then one day when you come across a save that wont transfer to the SD card, you will have a good idea why the console is behaving the way it does. if you did NOT take the time to learn about these saves, and instead you just assumed that something was broken, you are more likely to do something stupid trying to fix it and tear something up.

also, there are a bunch of hacks you can use with names that you might not recognize unless you have played with the console.
Replace Health Screen with Backmenu, Auto-Press A at Health Screen, Block Disc Updates, Block Online Updates, No System Menu Background Music, No System Menu sounds AT ALL, Move Disc Channel, Remove NoCopy Save File Protection, Recovery Mode (DISABLE below hack first)
Recovery Mode press Dpad-R on GC pad 4P, Region Free EVERYTHING, No-Delete HAXX,JODI,DVDX,DISC,DISK,RZDx, Force Wifi Connection Test Failure, Blackscreen at Wii System Menu startup!, Freeze Wii at Healthscreen!
if you just start up a program and say "oh shit! TURN ON ALL TEH HAXX!!" without knowing what they all mean, then you are gonna end up really fast with a big white paperweight.
