Hi all,

yesterday my sister found her and my 3DS XL after it's been unused for about 9-10 years. We both had Gateway cards, but since we were kids our dad handled all of the data. Unfortunately, neither of our cards work anymore. Additionally, while my sister is still able to enter the Gateway menu, it just crashes for me.

I am on firmware Ver. 4.5.0-10E and my sister is on Ver. 4.5.0-9E.

After some browsing through the SD card and some research I learned that the EmuNAND contains all of our old data.
I remembered that I took a lot of pictures with the Gateway Mode being active.

Is there any way to recover this data? I would love to browse through those old pictures and my sister wants to revisit her old saves. Any help is appreciated!

Thank you in advance :)

You will have to be more specific about what cards you are referring to and how you have inferred that they do not work anymore.

If you are looking for old pictures and old saves, then that would not be stored in the emuNAND.

We only have the red Gateway cards. Running both of them through the diagnostic tool within the gateway menu all tests come out as a fail. I checked the Micro SD card inside the gateway card with my pc and it seems to be fine, so I concluded that the red gateway cards must be faulty, since nothing has changed with our 3DSes since their last use.

As for the old saves and pictures, I found some pictures inside of the normal picture app on the Nintendo 3DS, before booting into Gateway mode. I remember other pictures I took and that the pictures I took within Gateway mode being active only being accessible while in said mode. So basically almost all the pictures I took with my Nintendo are locked in that mode which I can't access due to the cards being presumabely broken

Any games launched from the GW cart have the saves stored in the SD card root, and (I think) there is still no way to read these saves outside of GW mode, you have to use a save manager while in GW mode to export them to a decrypted format.

If you still have the emuNAND you can get access to any of the data on it. Even if you don't, you can get access to any cias that were installed and the save data that belongs to them quite easily, as long as you didn't format the sysNAND or emuNAND. But probably you didn't use cias much or at all, most GW users back in the day (myself included) primarily used .3ds roms. So most of your saves will be in the GW format.

Pictures I think are just stored in the DCIM folder on the SD card.

How exactly did you check them..?

Isn't "Gateway mode" accessible even without a functional Gateway card..?
