Party like it's 2011 as Skyrim releases on the Nintendo Switch 2

GBAtemp users face a dilemma more than most when it comes to the Switch 2. To update or not to update? Many wait patiently for homebrew, others less patiently, and some are just waiting for a game that's worth updating for. In the six months since the system launched, we've seen Nintendo publish the likes of Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananza, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, and Kirby Air Riders exclusively to their new console. For some this wasn't enough. Some were still waiting for something legendary, something special. Something wheeled out for every half-year anniversary. Some were waiting for Skyrim.

It is time to rejoice, and for many time to update your systems, as little-known game development studio Bethesda have today released the latest version of 2011's Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim for Nintendo's hyrbrid wonderkid. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition is now available via digital download for the Switch 2, along with a free upgrade path for those who already own the Anniversary Edition of the original Switch release. This new version promises enhanced resolution with DLSS anti-aliasing, better loading times and performance, and mouse controls, alongside the motion controls and Amiibo support of the original Switch release. It should be noted that the game still runs at 30fps however.

Though there is an upgrade path, it's not quite as simple as Nintendo's "Switch 2 Edition" titles, with users required to jump through a few hoops to avoid shelling out for the game a second (or seventh for some) time. Owners of the digital version should see a 100% discount on the new release assuming they own the Anniversary Edition upgrade. Physical cartridge owners however will first need to remove their Anniversary Edition DLC before launching the game and pressing Y on the main menu to access the eShop. If you own the upgrade (but again, do not have it installed), you should be able to download the Switch 2 version for that same 100% off. Once you've added this to your account, you actually don't need your cartridge anymore, so feel free to pass it onto a friend for the holidays!

Will this finally be the time you beat Skyrim, instead of just wandering around doing side content for tens of hours? Let us know!

I kinda wish more games that support it would also just support an actual USB mouse too. I know Nobunaga's Ambition does, and it can just be a lot more comfortable for longer sessions. I fully support what Nintendo were going for though. Joystick for movement plus mouse for camera seems the ideal in my mind.
Just waiting for the inevitable mouse-con.

This isn't completely unrelated to this thread, but I just wanted to post this, because it makes me laugh every time. Switch needs this "masterpiece"!

You act like Starfield was a flop, like Concord or something. It's actually pretty good, 3.5/5 star rating by users on Xbox.

I need to try the joycons mouse mode more. Been trying it on Prime 4 and I did not like it.
Have you tried mouse mode on Cyberpunk? Just curious, I want to check it out too, but haven't had time.

Like all Nintendo controller things, I'm expecting 3rd party implementation to suck, but I'm hoping that CD Projekt Red will have tried harder than most (and maybe even succeeded?).

Is this game really that good?
It's alright. It does a lot of things well, but it doesn't do any one particular thing better than other games in the genre. My biggest gripe has always been difficulty, or lack thereof. Bethesda didn't design any of the systems to truly work with one another, so you can break the game in a couple hours with just smithing.

Really starting to wonder if Bethesda is actually making anything new right now, or just plans on re-re-releasing Skyrim for the rest of eternity until they fold under their own incompetence.

Is this game really that good?

Its one of the best mod platforms ever developed. Too bad Nintendo doesn't allow game mods on their consoles...

Entire Switch1 game catalog, and to date, 246 Switch2 titles confirmed, yet you think that?
Haters be hating today I guess.

1) So why not just stick with a Switch instead of the $450+ "upgrade"?
2) "Confirmed" just means we know about them. Plenty of "confirmed" games have been cancelled well (or just) before release.

I agree its a bit of a simplification, but the Switch 2 ain't catching my interest yet. Their list of exclusives are tiny, and most of the games they claim are "new" are just updated versions with slightly shinier graphics.

Looked into it. Definitely a Bethesda level of competence.

- Internal resolution still appears to be 720p just upscaled to 1080p now
- Framerate still capped to 30fps
- Slightly better textures and lighting
- Mouse Mode
- Significantly more input lag
- The game is now ~55GB which is over double the size of any other release of the game.

30fps has to be a joke for a 2011 game
This was very clearly cobbled together and thrown out after probably a week or two of work. Look at my other comment.

I guess if you're 14 you were 0 when games came out in 2011 so they're brand new to you in 2025. Yet another reason it sucks being old and have seen or played all these games a long time ago.

To be fair to the Switch 2 here, it already has more exclusive games than I can think of for XB and PS5. Does the PS5 have anything notable outside of Demon’s Souls and Astrobot nowadays? Not a bad thing in the grand scheme of things, but it’s something that pops into my head whenever I hear people talk about the lack of exclusive content for the system.

Now that content not being interesting to you is completely reasonable, and not wanting to pick up the system until it already has a library you’re interested in is also completely reasonable. But it’s been six months, I think people are expecting too much with a lot of these comments. As I mentioned off handedly in the main post, Nintendo have already published four Switch 2 exclusive titles themselves. In a six month period that’s kinda wild in my mind lol.
