Star Fox demo for the Mega Drive / Genesis created by gasega68k

Romhacking never ceases to amaze and surprise with the possibilities of what some really dedicated and knowledgeable developers can create compared to what was previously thought to be impossible for certain consoles, given their limitations back in the day.

gasega68k, who previously worked on a demo build for Mega Drive / Genesis of Wolfenstein 3D with its full Episode 1 working on the console with full sound, has released a demonstration video of a Star Fox build that's being worked on, with full polygons and music, with the music being downsampled and streaming at 12kHz. The demo features an intro and the 1st level and some movement / shooting from the airwing, looking quite promising for something of that scale running on a mere Mega Drive / Genesis console compared to the SNES and its reliance of the SuperFX ship for 3D effects and polygons.

Did he forget the blast processing? Cause I kinda expected better framerate than the official snes version. :P

(And before everyone says "You dummy, don't know nothing about hardware and programming for megadrive") :ninja:

Oh man, I hope this gets finished into the full game. Absolutely incredible work.
It is a demo after all, I'm not sure if this is going to be full production or what.

Amazing work. Now let's expect Nintendo to take this project down when this will release like Star Wolf tries to take down Star Fox.
don't think they can do shit this time. now starfox is owned by rare and they are owned by mic now. so it would be mic who dmca it. but mic aren't like nintenDMCA

What on earth are you on about Rare had nothing to do with the original Starfox. Starfox was made by Argonot Software/Nintendo. The game started life as the 3rd game in Argonots Starglider series until Nintendo got involved and added in the fox. Rare was only given the the rights to use the license which is owned by Nintendo to make Starfox Adventures after Nintendo had seen the original game Rare were working on called Dinosaur Planet nothing more nothing less.

Can't wait to see the majority of mods come out of this. As the saying goes, Sega does what Nintendon't.
How does that apply to this situation exactly? Nintendo created Star Fox to begin with, Sega never made such a game, it was the fans that put this together. I'm confused in terms of what Sega is doesing that Ninden is don'ting in this situation.

Is it in regard to mods? There are already Star Fox mods for the SNES out there, so I'm still confused on your thought there.

That's what I was thinking, I would like mods to come out for this the same as to what they did with the SNES. But I doubt that this demo would come out at any time soon because of Ninty's devious DMCA practices.

You must have had a sunstroke. Star Fox was NEVER owned by Rare. Rare has made franchises like Banjo-Kazooie and Conker's Bad Fur Day and also helped Nintendo with their first Donkey Kong Country titles on SNES and Game Boy.

Star Fox, like Mario, Zelda and Metroid, is Nintendo's all along.

I thought you said you 'deteste' ROM hacking? 😒
This is about making a game from scratch or with a source code under hand.
But yeah, I STILL do hate ROM hacking.

The Megadrive /Sega Genesis was slightly better at fake 3D that the Super Nintendo, the only reason it didn't get a Donkey Kong Country like game is that it got Sonic 3D Blast instead. Also the budget Nintendo put in the first Donkey Kong Country is kinda ridiculous. Never before had a videogame had so much advertising even months after launch.

Well.... maybe Sonic 1 had more since it was also an advertising to buy a Sega Megadrive and there was the Sonic 1 plus Sonic 2 combo.

Blast processing, in it's truest sense, is giving up some per pixel color accuracy, to be able to overcome the traditional colors limit the console would otherwise have.

If Sega had shared how to do it more freely, it's safe to estimate that more Genesis games during it's active commercial lifetime would have color parity to what was being done on the Super Nintendo.

Starfox is not fake 3D though, it uses colored lowpoly models without textures. But yep megadrive has a better cpu so can do better 3D than stock snes (in fact snes needs the superfx chip in the cartridge to run starfox).
