No way they'd abandon it, LoZ is their baby. They rarely cancel anything about it.
And the one time they did cancel a game, they put another fun game in it's place (Mystical Seed Of X=Oracle Of X)

Wasn't that game free during Nintendo E3?
It announced that it was going to be available as DSi Ware in September at the E3 conference. No one actually played it.

from what i read the game it the SAME on the came with, LOZ:LTTP GBA

see this

so
if you had 4 gbas, the link cables and 4 copies for the game, you could play it

I have four GBAs, a 4-player cable, and a copy of the game with three flash carts and I've never been able to successfully organize a single session. I always wanted to access that last dungeon in LttP.

Hopefully this game being free and being wireless will make it a little more accessible.

The DSiWare version will either support 4-player wireless gameplay or for the first time single player gameplay. I hope that the latter will be the case since I don't have any friends with 3DS systems and I doubt it will support online multiplayer =/

too bad, it's called FOUR swords, you need at least two players.
Online multiplayer wouldn't work well, you'd need to speak to the person to co-operate and beat the game.

I can't wait for this. Never had the chance to play Four Swords before because I didn't have the game or even a GBA link cable

I played the GameCube version 2 players, but never 4. I lack friends that live near me

I'm pretty sure four swords is going to be released alone and I doubt nintendo would release a local multiplayer only game. If it doesn't have online multiplayer support I bet it will have gamecube style single player of four swords adventure.

The DSi has a mic.
When most people say Online, they mean with random strangers, and cooperating with random stranger is...hard
And it'd be laggy as hell.
I'm not including the possibilty of you having friends to play online with because most people who'd favor online right now don't have local friends with a DSiware compatible device

When it's free it makes sense. And they are

They're not going to release a free game and add content to it. The wireless is a must since link cables are no longer supported
It's the GBA version, which means you need a friend with the game to play AT ALL. No single player, there's a reason why they didn't call it Four swords Adventure at E3

On a side note, you can enter that dungeon with a glitch.
