I am with jumpman17, xpsp2 can be made into a fully patched and as secure as windows gets (SP3 is not like SP1 or SP2, it is just a rollup of the updates with a few minor tweaks (that can break stuff) thrown in). I made an offline update and a batch file to install them.
Offline updates:

"dir /b >>c:\a.txt" will give the you file names in a file called a.txt which you will find in your c:\ folder (you can leave out the c:\ part but most of those apps make an iso)
I forget the commands and they vary on a few to make an unattended install but if you run the updates with a /help it should bring the commands up.

I have used Windows 7 for a few weeks now and my initial impression was much better than with Vista although the OS is struggling already after just a few weeks.

Everything is quite slow, mostly at the first few minutes after logging in. I have disabled most unneeded services but it's still not working as fast as I want it to.

Going back to xp tonight

Despite the fact it has been proven that windows 7 is faster than XP SP3, i once read this statistic i forgot where though:(, it really didn't feel like that at all. I mean if your looking for the ,looks of vista, despite they are really crap to other OS's, just go for XP and customize it as much as you want.

Why not make windows xp look like windows 7? my sis's windows xp media center 2005 is now windows 7 home premium. it has everything you need to see in windows 7 in a windows xp OS.

My vista basic is now disguised as windows 7 ultimate. haha.

I'll buy windows 7 if it has the right price for me. OEM vista premium is priced at US$129.99 or Php 6,500 (same price as a nintendo DS). I will wait if there's a similar price for that. hopefully, vista will be phased out.

Windows 7 is still in beta. Don't know why so many people have tried it as a main desktop OS and made all their final judgments already... I would recommend it when it's final. Sure there are performance improvements, but the whole point in the OP's case is compatibility...

Personally, I would say some simple flavor of Linux (Ubuntu) with XP and Windows 7 in virtual machines.

Isn't this so surprising? That Microsoft made such a horrible OS, that they had to start making a brand new OS that doesn't have screwed up driver support and CPU usage.

I'm surprised they took such measures.

Windows 7 won't improve compatibility too much, I wouldn't recommend it especially considering it's a beta.

Windows 7. I'm using it as my main OS atm and it is fine. I'll reinstall vista once I get my 500GB back from newegg (died). I'll still dual boot

Why reinstall Vista? If you're going to install an OS you might as well make it XP.

I'm not one of those anti-vista people. It works great for me.

I've got a requirements question. My PC specs are as follows:

Pentium III 1GHZ
256MB memory
16MB radeon Mobile

Lets see if MY PC can run Windows 7 better than XP. Do you think I CAN run 7?

I think you can only run windows 5, anything more than that is impossible.

You CAN run Windows 7 on 256MB of RAM, if you've installed it on a different computer. It's just setup that doesn't let you install it on that amount of RAM.

No but it will run on a 600MHz, 512MB UMPC very well. I'm using it now, and it is my main OS 1GB of RAM. Much faster and smoother than Vista.
