Piggyback - Thank you prehistoricman! Anyone attempting this and need any pointers pm me or message me here.

What I have discovered thus far:
Hynix ram chips are slightly thicker. If your 1.6 has hynix chips ram legs will barely reach making it harder to solder them down. Samsung on samsung is much easier as samsungs have a lower profile and legs are slightly longer.

Samsung on Samsung: (I recommend this for first timers)

Not sure why we are attracting high level xbox modding discussions these days but I approve of it never the less.

Congratulations on the mod. Is it still Linux/homebrew purposes or have the game modding set found a use?

Going to be going for a CPU mod next?

This was released in June of 2022 (Have about 10+ of these done)

Mainly for Xbox og games, retros and Homebrew games

I have everything to do a cpu mod - Except a motherboard to test 1.4ghz Tualatins (Once I source this I will be attempting the upgrade) Don't wanna try if the CPU is bad :)

I mod and repair most consoles and the hottest thing right now is Gamecube and Xbox og since both got 2022 love.

Curious as to what advantages one gets in doing so (the ram upgrade), i assume it's meant only for homebrew, emulators and such on the Xbox and not the Xbox games themselves?
Also, never heard of the CPU mod.. 🤔
Are the pins on the chip easy to desolder/ remove, without any risk of running the mobo? Just asking, i'm not going to attempt any of this any time soon.. 😅

The CPU mod is a fairly old one. It was noted that the not quite a pentium 3 that formed the xbox CPU could be replaced with a higher clocked equivalent (usually 1GHz compared to the base 733MHz but higher still became an option).
https://www.xbmc4xbox.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=17&p=6003 has a bit more.

Soldering wise then any heat risks something. In this case I would highly suggest hot air or IR soldering options. For hot air then preferably a nozzle that does it all at once* (or at the very least one side at a time) and probably still want some foil covering (check out not only the little black resistors but the even smaller capacitors if you zoom right in). Surface mount stuff for me is probably less risky than a lot of through hole stuff, but at the same time that is because of time taken to do setup in the first place -- lightly yanking on a pin with a firestarter iron the other side being not that and what usually starts the process of a new solderer having to learn trace repair and alternate point finding.

Soldering back on varies. In an ideal world a stencil would be available such that you could smear on the solder paste and have it be where you need it, the same sucker as pictured would be able to place it near enough (flowing solder can actually move chips where they need to be). If you were exceptionally bored though you could do pin by pin with a needle applicator. If you like to live dangerously you could hope your solder mask stops any shorts from happening (or maybe spread on and run something down between the pads to clear what it can), or at least renders them so few that you can sort manually with a nice drag tip method or something but that is super fine pitch to be trying that sort of thing on.

*will look something like https://www.circuitspecialists.com/content/108949/a1127-0.jpg but for the package type in question.

Traditionally most mods to hardware that were not simple BIOS replacement chips/TSOP, hard drive replacement, graphics out tweaks or fancy LCD display screens were pretty much only of use to either running Linux (before raspberry pi, indeed before even the sheevaplug/pogoplug, there was this if you wanted a general purpose user programmable computer on your TV), a few choice pieces of homebrew that were not Linux or maybe turning it into a kind of dev kit. The CPU stuff saw a more limited application in games, however it also came with some downsides for others (if you expect a fixed speed then you might well code to it). That said I am years out of anything like this being current and with some more light hacking some of those extras could be used to improve games about as you would expect if you gained more memory/clock speed.

Heh. Didn't know it was breakout/adapter boards.

Here I thought some of the stuff done for adapting core2 server chips into consumer ones was fun... seen nothing yet it seems.

Forgive me if I don't offer to do BGA rework with non socketed socket replacement on top though.

Yeah CPU interposer board goes in-between. It's a reball sandwich essentially:

Hey man, I dont mean to thread jack but do you have documentation showing which resistors to move and replace for the voltage settings on v1.6? Or do you just use the 1.4v settings?
