Hacking X360Key or Flashed Drive?

I have been thinking about hacking my Xbox lately, and at first I saw the X360Key. After finding out that you can't get on live with it I looked into flashing my drive.
But I read that X360key is going to support custom firmware in a future update. So I recently looked into both options. Here are some questions/problems that I have with both.

X360Key

1.) I have a stock firmware on my DVD drive. Here is what X360Key says on the 'How it works' tab
"If you have a stock drive
a dump must be obtained using available tools (we recommend the Maximus Lizard 360)."
I then looked into the Maximus Lizard 360, and saw that it was $100. The problem with that is, the $100 maximus + the $104 x360key would be a lot of money. I was wondering if there was a way to obtain a dump with either a cheaper tool, or for free.

Flashing the Drive

I would need a CK3 Pro, and CK3 Probe 3, and the X360Usb pro. Which comes to around $150, thats no problem.
The problem is i would need Dual Layer DVDs. Those are pretty expensive. I saw a 15 pack at Best Buy for $30.

Based on these, Which should i do?

Just get it flashed by someone.
Its not worth getting all the flashing accessories if you are just gonna flash that one Drive.

Also, DL disc's are cheap on ebay.

As brilliant as it sounds, i kinda question the legitimentness of this, although, i do want a 360key, shame its all £75+.

keep with disk drive flashing. Cheaper, less chance of being banned. Proven to be reliable.

Do you have any sata ports on your mother board? If so I'd go ck3like and probe 3. That's less than 50 bucks.

Dual layer dvds are not that expensive anymore, just fine an online store like newegg and get them there.

People swear by verbatims, but the cheaper ones always work for me. They say the cheaper ones may burn your laser out faster, but if you are loading the games on a hard drive then it don't even matter.

I'd wait and see how it fairs once it comes out. He isn't going to say good things about. Xkey is competition for xecutor and c4e is in bed with them. If it works and works well, it won't take long for xecutor to make a copy and suddenly the tone will change and it'll be safe, but only their one as it's backed by him.

Assuming it is not a slim (things are a bit up in the air right now on the slim with new firmwares locking things down, lots of models and several methods of doing things) there are 4 main "models" (technically 3 but most work with 4), ignoring small changes and slim stuff they are all the same drive but with various firmwares.

Look at the manufacture date on your 360. Dates are not so firm around changeover points but you can get an idea

7 series (appeared in April 2008)
8v1 (appeared in June 2009 although repair shops used it at first)
8v2
9

8v2 and 9 appeared around the same time (late October 2009) and stuck around until the slim appeared.

All can be dumped with MRA/pin lift (you can do it with wires and little else or you can buy a cheap PCB or you can splash out on a fancy probe) or pogo ma thoin (which can be made with basic tools- there was a big contest at the time of release that cooked up hundreds of variations) which is the suggested method these days for most people that want to do this method. If you had it flashed with LT and have no key then chances are you will need to do that hack regardless of model (there was a hacked version of LT that added the 7 series probe hack back but you probably will not have this).

The 7 series can be dumped with a probe. You can buy a probe (will usually come as an extra to drive powering tools) or you can make one for next to nothing (either serial or buy a USB to serial cable and mod that)
The 8v1 can be dumped with just a compatible sata card.
The 8v2 and 9 series are effectively the same thing but the sticker on top can start with 8 or 9. These need MRA or pogo ma thoin.

On top of this there are also a few devices like the x360usb pro and 360 Lizard appearing that act as standalone drive flashing tools but the ultimately do the same methods just without the need to beat windows and a sata card (or your sata drivers if you have a compatible motherboard) into shape.

Edit: @benbop1992 there was a mod to a PC type DVD drive to allow it to run in a 360 some time ago- http://www.xboxhacker.org/index.php?topic=8335.0 and we had similar things for the GC and commercial stuff for the wii that did it.
