Hipster Windows is hipster.

(Eh, not too concerned with a logo I barely notice as it is. The design is bleck. Absences of color is bleck as well.)

It's a good thing Windows doesn't really need to sell itself to much of anybody; after nearly twenty years of the old logo's incarnations, it's pretty big to just throw it all away. A large portion of modern consumers associate Windows with the four-colored 'flag' design, and this is a pretty dramatic shift.

It also worries me that they insist that the reasoning was to put it in line with the Metro design, because as of right now I feel like Metro is Windows 8's greatest misstep. I'll admit I haven't tried the demo versions yet, but I didn't care much for what I played with of WP7, and it certainly isn't working on the Xbox. I don't feel like it'd make a good PC interface, and I feel like that's what they're overlooking when they talk about tablet integration on Windows 8. I'm sure you can turn it off if you don't want to use it, but why make it a standard in the first place?

Wait.. So which one if them was ignored to make the "actual" 8 into Windows 7?
Windows version numbering usually doesn't match the releases. I believe the rough numbering is as follows:
Windows 1
Windows 2 (incl. 2.1x)
Windows 3 (incl. 3.1x)
Windows 4 (WIndows 95, 98, ME)

Newer OS versions are more or less based on where they stand in the Windows NT family:
Windows NT 5 (2000, XP and variants)
Windows NT 6 (Vista, Windows 7)

Newer versions in the same line have updated numbering; for example, Windows ME is version 4.9, Windows 7 is version 6.1, and Windows 8 is only version 6.2, which is interesting given how much they want to build up Windows 8 as a major change-up in the field.

A lot of that could have been a bit better explained or worded but I'm too lazy for that.

it looks like a pharmaceutical company.

it seems to me there is a conspiracy against microsoft and all designers in the world refuse to do something good for them.

I prefer the Vista logo. It's the only one that doesn't actually say "Windows".
Thats because they were that embarrassed by Vista, they tried not to be associated with it.
Vista was never that bad of an OS. It was just slightly to far ahead of the average computer specs of the time. Nowadays no computer will even blink at running Vista's Aero but back then it was kind of a problem.

Eugh... Everything about Windows 8 just puts me off. You want to make a big deal of your tablet interface, fine. It should not be the default interface though. Make all the apps compatible with any version of Windows 8 but only auto-enable the interface on the tablet versions. I like Metro. Its quite nice to look at (i like it on the 360 though the Kinect keyboard is a pain when you don't have a kinect) and is designed well for the tablet market. Current computers however...well Keyboard and Mouse is still more suited to windowed environments in my opinion.

They weren't embarrassed by Vista by that point, they were advertising it as a new generation of OS and had that whole "WOW" campaign. It was a new look, and I never had any problems at all with it (and regulars at these forums can guess why). Then, based on the feedback, they went out with 7 and focused more on intuitive controls rather than flashy looks.
Now they're trying to become an all-in-one OS for PC and mobile media... and thus far, I'm not impressed. It's for tablets and Xbox, not PCs. Then again, I've yet to see the finished product. Once I see if it can do everything 7 can and more, that's probably when I'll pre-order it (at heavily discounted prices).

the logo would be 100 times better if they got rid of the window together. it already say "windows" there is no need for an image of a window next to it.
