Title: Old 3DS XL black screen that survives everything, software or hardware?
Hi all,
I got a secondhand Old 3DS XL (EUR) that arrived bricked: it powers on with a solid blue LED and backlit but black screens, no sound, and closing the lid doesn't put it to sleep. The Wi-Fi LED does light up and toggles with the switch.
I got in with ntrboot (DSpico), made NAND backups and reinstalled b9s 1.4. Luma loads fine (SELECT opens the config menu), but a normal boot just hangs on black. Rosalina never opens and Recovery Mode doesn't load either. I've gone through the whole Black Screen Unbrick page on the hacks.guide wiki, including a regular and a manual CTRTransfer, resetting 00010017 and using a fresh SD. ctrcheck comes back clean, and there are never any Luma exception dumps or errdisp.txt. I even set up a RedNAND EmuNAND and it hangs exactly the same way, and two consecutive NAND backups hash identically, so the eMMC seems to read fine.
On the hardware side, 3ds_hw_test reports 0 errors, and I've swapped the Wi-Fi module, IR board and battery with a working 3DS XL, plus disconnected the camera flex. No change with any of them.
The only odd thing: once, randomly, Luma showed "Unable to mount CTRNAND or load the CTRNAND FIRM" instead of the black screen. Never happened again.
Is there anything software-side I'm still missing, or is it time to swap motherboards with the donor? Thanks!
