Well supercard did initially try cloning gateway too dispite the long history of gateway code bricking systems of clo e cards and iirc a handful of people ended up bricked by their hubris in thinking they could succeed where everyone else had already failed, freegame was just botched together to try sweep their silly decision under the rug and hope nobody noticed

You know, the more I think about it. I should just make a thread asking people what the like the most about Gateway and maybe try to get a project going where we introduce those features into the current CFW scene. .3DS rom loading should actually be very possible and with Rosalina, an easier cheat engine should be possible. We just need focus on tackling these since they are the two most common comments I see regarding Gateway.

I appreciate the attention to all of this. I'll just say the reason I like GW is that it just works for me, and as for your emuNAND statement I would have to disagree as I like keeping my sysNAND as pristine as possible (minus the hacks to get into GW). I see a benefit that if something happens to my emuNAND I just wipe and start over, sysNAND you could say is the same, but things happen. SD cards can fizzle out during an operation or restore, the NAND has only so many writes available (it's a lot I know, but still a limitation), your last backup wasn't taken correctly or becomes corrupt during a transfer, the verification stage reported falsely. Those are pretty extreme examples, but I've worked in the tech space long enough to know to avoid those situations at a personal and professional level.

I've kept up on the latest happenings and it really is about the time sink to get everything set up, and that every few months to a year there seems to be some new "ultimate/superior" method to hacking the 3DS. First it was GW, then ninjhax, then CFW's galore, then the golden child Luma, then A9LH with Luma, now B9S with whatever else it brings. Some people can wake up and say "eh I'll re-hack my 3DS today" and do it no problem while not all of us have that time available to do it on a whim. I have GW and it works for me, I don't even use cheats which seems like the one-upper to the product anymore.

If the GW team truly is done or they don't post any updates in the next year then it will definitely be time to switch solutions, but until then the rest of the GW users like me are just stuck in limbo.

I don't want to sound like I am dismissing your post, but when it comes down the emuNAND vs sysNAND debate, I just like my space. Having a new3DS means taking up roughly 2GB of space for an emuNAND and I just don't like giving up that space if I don't have to. Thus I only used emuNANDs when I had to use them and stopped using them when they were no longer needed.
Now I actually do use emuNAND for extreme levels of testing. Basically when I am going out of my way to completely fuck up a test, I use an emuNAND.
But I only include it as a negative for the space argument more than anything. I know not everyone feels the same, which is why I never press it beyond a few mentions here and there.

1. You can use emuNAND on Luma if you wish, and at least you aren't limited to 11.2.
2. It literally takes under an hour to switch. And if you really want to you can use Gateway with B9S.
3. You are taking a lot of risks with your system not having B9S. It's very susceptible to bricking or losing access to hax.

So let me just say, I am extremely sorry if I keep sounding so horrible towards the Gateway and it's userbase. I am extremely passionate person who care way more about the community than any normal person should. When I see an issue, I tackle it head on like mother bear running after anything near her cubs. I get a bit more irrassonal because I just want what's best for the community. Even to the point where I forget about the proper approach.
You know, the more I think about it. I'm all for that.
Those two things are pretty much the only things Gateway has over CFW anymore besides its ease of use (but CFW is getting better at that too)
For me personally, I don't really use cheats, so .3DS rom loading is the only reason I still use mine. Though every now and then once I'm done with a game it's fun to mess around with cheats, but I think it's too much hassle to use cheats on 3DS, Gateway or no Gateway, since you need to track down cheats and put them into files yourself. It was better back when you just downloaded a file containing every cheat and placed it on the SD (DS flashcarts)
Creating cheats for games can be pretty fun though and that's something NTR-CFW is bad at, but which even Gateway is not that great at. There are a few things that are missing from Gateway's cheat engine, for example you can only search for hex values, I'd like to see decimal and float/double as well, and templates for creating cheat files (Gateway requires you to type it all in by hand, would be nice if you could select a found value and "add to cheat list" and it would be filled in with default values) plus a better memory scanner/editor. I don't think it would be a particularly complex thing to add to Rosalina. .3DS/.3DZ rom loading however would require hooking into at least a few different system calls and making complex edits to them, so that's probably why it hasn't been done in CFW yet.

Gotcha. Yeah, when you have a 256GB SD card like me, 2GB is insignificant in the scheme of things.

This has been stated over and over and over again with all the other methods and it's pretty much a blank threat to move to the new solution. If I keep my sysNAND on 9.2 I'm not susceptible to losing hacks at any time, ever. I'm sure the road to B9S has it's own pitfalls to becoming bricked along the way just like A9LH and anything else.

Without B9S, if anything happens to your sysNAND you need a NAND backup and a hardmod, or your console is a goner. With B9S, you can restore your NAND in five seconds or do a 9.2 CTR transfer. You can believe what you like, but what you are doing is the equivalent of choosing to leave your car unlocked with an iPad on view on the front seat instead of locking it and taking free high level insurance.

Sorry if it seemed like I was disagreeing with you, I do see the benefit, but I'm also not modifying my system every day or every few months for your third point to matter to my situation is all. Is it possible to import GW emuNAND to a Luma emuNAND easily? And is it possible to have two emuNAND's at the same time in case I want to use my GW card functionality through A9LH/B9S methods?

EmuNANDs are all the same, you don't have to convert it. You can use the same emuNAND on Luma and Gateway. And yes you can have multiple emuNANDs with Luma. Gateway might not play nice with it though.

Everytime i see a gw thread i can clearly see the B9S / A9LH / CFW people circle jrking over the software they use while the gw people MOSTLY say the just don't care and don't have any benefit using a cfw.
Is it that hard to just let them be. I'm also a gw user, switching is time thrown away since i have something that works fine for me.

If i have car, which can drive me from a to b and back, why should i buy new one? When times come and it doesn't operate as i need, i will switch. Simple as that. Now please... all... be quit and get a cookie..

What Quantumcat said is true, the only exception is that GW will only work on 11.2 and below, so your emuNAND needs to be kept at or below that firmware. And if you even try to boot it on a 11.3+ sysNAND it will wipe A9LH/B9S.
Also converting save data from GW to CIA is a bit of a hassle, but it's made easier with this tool: https://gbatemp.net/threads/gateway-save-export-helper.465503/#post-7197728

The problem is that our car may be dieing on the highway which is the point of this thread. Right now our car is sputtering because the gas tank sprung a leak, and the manufacturer has stopped producing gas tanks for the past 6 months. They might pick production back up, but they haven't released a statement saying so, or if they are closing their doors for good.

Hey @garyopa - Do you have any insight to what the GW team is doing? Is product support dead?

What if you have a car with a defect that means it might explode at any moment? In that case it will be too late for you to switch. Jumping out of a plane, you might say, "why do I need a parachute, I'm perfectly safe in the sky" but when you are splatted on the ground, then it is too late to change your mind. You can do what you wish, it would just be better if you were making an informed decision. If you are using cheats, and you have weighed up the options and decided the extra risk is worth using the cheats, that's one thing. But if you are using it simply because you don't know the danger, that's another. In the first case a rational decision has been made, but in the second, the user should be educated so they know what they are doing. It is called looking out for each other. If you saw someone about to cross the road against the traffic and be about to be run over, would you not grab them? If they saw the car coming and decided they could outrun it because they calculated that their need to hurry outweighed the risk of being hit that is one thing. But if they haven't even seen the car that's about to hit them that's another. I don't like to see people hit by cars, or have their consoles broken or hax lost, if I can do something about it. Maybe the person yells because I hurt their arm, and maybe they insist on running in front of the car anyway because they didn't understand what I said, but at least I have tried and that's all I can do.

He doesn't do anything with sysnand, there is no risk of anything.
OTOH... having both GW and B9S is fairly quick and painless these days. And worrying about the limited amount of writes on good flash memory in 2017 is just silly (apart from a few computing workloads that none of us is doing).

Even with SysNAND, so long as you're informed (staying at 11.2 or below, blocking updates), there's effectively no risk. The hyperbole involved each time there's some new hotness released is out of fucking control sometimes (the "Day 1 B9S" badges are glorious). That said, I also agree with you on using B9S + GW. You end up with the features of both, and Gateway mode on-demand via chainload. It's a relatively painless process, and while there's not a ton of reasons beyond future-proofing compatibility if you're coming from A9LH, it's certainly worthwhile moving if you're on 4.3-5 MSET, or even 9.2 at this stage. Additionally, I'm finding very few reasons for folks to remain on EmuNAND, but that said, if it works for you, there's no harm in keeping in it at this stage while decent support still exists.

The issue here is that everything is a magic black box, specifically, that box is https://3ds.guide
A very high percentage of the people who follow that guide have no idea what they are doing. But hey, it works, so let's just let it be.
And GW is like that as well! It's a black box as well.
The problem is that there isn't a very nice source of information. Sure, you can scrounge up some dev blogs, read through them, and then look at the code, but I can guarantee you that most people who hack their 3DS don't know how to write one line of assembly.
To quote https://yifan.lu/2016/03/28/3ds-code-injection-through-loader/
writing mods for the 3DS is extremely difficult and usually requires an in depth knowledge of the system even to make simple modifications.

If people know what they are doing, and they aren't just following the instructions like a sheep, they are going to have an easier time with the new developments in the scene.
The 3DS hacking scene progresses so quickly that a lot of people that were on the cutting edge got left in the dust instantly.

I can't like this enough, and you're not the first to raise similar concerns with them. Then again, I was surprised when cheat support was added in the first place, so we didn't scream too loudly about the flaws when it was first released.
