Okay so I know that there are threads for this already but I need to know is it safe updating my softmodded wii or is there another way.

It's safe, but make sure your HBC is up to date first or it will get removed.
However if you just want to use the Wii Shop Channel you can update only that part (and install the IOS needed). This can be done with a combination of NUSD and a WAD manager. There was a homebrew tool to update automatically, but it hasn't been updated in a while.

My system menu is v4.3u

Or, I also heard that if you use flash memory, it can act as more "RAM" at least windows tell me when I stick a flash drive into it. -
