5. You CAN play WiiWare/VC/Custom Channels you've installed via WAD Manager and play them via the SD Channel! (Thanks stev!) Once you update to 4.0, you must find a IOS60 file, patch it with freethebug, and then install it via wad manager. Once you have, use the "MOVE" option on the Wii to move the WAD over to the SD card, launch it, success!
Okay, can anyone explain how I get this IOS60 and where to get freethebug?

@ppc_gba:The installer gives me ret=-1017 error, but i have installed cIOS36 rev8.Is there any idea how to fix this?

Are you on 4.0?

If so, you'll have to downgrade using cIOS Downgrader (and IOS Downgrader afterwards) and then use the installer.
And a installer based on cIOS249 ?
smile.gif

It would be difficult to make ?
I don't want downgrade.

Ok what just happened to me scared the crap out of me

I decided to reinstall a certyain custom WAD onto the 4.0E Wii Menu then went to play Madworld and when I went to teh diisc channel I got the Black screen of Doom!!! Fortunatelly I restarted, removed the WAD and it played fine afterwards.

It was a custom Wad of Wad Manager, can anyone shine some light on this?

are there any downsides on using 4.0 with CIOSCORPS? can preloader still be used? i want to upgrade, but i want to be sure that i have still all the benefits that i have now with cioscorps and preloader...

Same here. I believe that preloader will stop working (someone tried it already).
But, if we have preloader and want to update, we have to run hack remover and then simply update?

it depends.. how does "hack remover" feature exactly works ?

the problem is that the system menu itself is updated, preloader hacks are patches to the sysem menu and will be overwitten

Hack remover, if I remember well, remove two INI files from the NAND, the files in wich the hack are saved (basically a copy of hack.ini on the SD).

I'm not flaming anyone who has updated but to be honest I don't really understand the desperation to upgrade to 4.0. Would I like to use a bigger SD card and run WW & VC from it? Of course. Will I update? No.

Personally, there is not much VC that I like that cannot be run through emulators and in regards to N64 games and WW I am quite happy to install and uninstall as and when I want them. After all, how many games can you be playing at one.

So for now I am quite happy to sit this one out.

I agree. I'm gonna stay put until I hear more news about this playing WW/VC from your SD bizo.

But I'd also like to do some testing. Anyway, people should be aware of what they are in for...

thing is, some people want to update to 4.0 because it's NEW, because they are bored and always need to have new stuff to try on ;-)

however, contrary to previous updates, 4.0 really brings something new this time and ironically could benefit to VC pirates having gigabytes of channels ready to use on their SD without going in the heavy process of reinstalling/deleting wads (with all the risk it implies when you are doing this without care)

Well, this isn't the case afaik. Until the hackers figure out how to compile a pre-packaged game keyed to yoru system (wads are NOT the same) you'll have to first install the game via wadmanager and then move it to your sd card and delete it from yoru harddrive. You see, you could always copy files to the sd but they wouldn't install on other systems because they are encrypted with your wii's key. I suspect that this is still the case. So if you have hundreds of warez titles this could still be quite akward and time consuming to use.

ok, i got a custom wad of an older version of wii homebrew launcher installed and running from sd card only. I went into the shop channel and nothing happened. I did see 4 new wii arcade titles (here's hoping for wads soon).

Here, a new installer (+src) running under cios249 for the lazy ppl: http://rapidshare.com/files/213704685/IOS6...singcios249.zip

pretty exciting being on the cutting edge

Is it really that heavy a process, it takes less than 5 minutes. Again, how many games can you be playing at the same time?

So basically, there's no real point in updating, unless you're legit and have enough Virtual Console games that aren't pirated for the update to be practical.
Sucks.
I have only $20 worth of VC games. I guess I can just launch those 3 games from my SD launcher to save space for other games.

Not necessarily. This update does do two good things:

1. Gives you all the latest IOS's so you don't need to hunt for and install them for the latest games to work.
2. Moving over free channels like the Internet Channel, Photo Channel, Nintendo Channel, etc, to have more space for custom channels, wiiware games/ vc games, etc.

QUOTE(blazingwolf @ Mar 25 2009, 09:57 PM) Also, if you want to undo your 4.0 install if you aren't happy with it for some reason, you can easily rollback to 3.2U through the homebrew channel.
Really.. how? Did you test this?

I understand that many people here want to be "published" and be the first to write a guide of something new. Can we at least though actually test if something is working before stating that it does?

I haven't tested it but it should work. Because 1. Homebrew Channel still works. 2. There is an app in the softmii package that downgrades your Wii to 3.2U, so therefore it should still work.

I understand that many people here want to be "published" and be the first to write a guide of something new. Can we at least though actually test if something is working before telling everyone that is does?

That waninkoko applications looks nice. But if you want to run pirated vc games, it won't be of any use.
If you move a pirated vc/wiiware game to sd, it will not run and you can't move it back to nand

installing on nand directly should work i guess. but you can move them to sd too and run from there?

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
