Hacking Wii 4.3U mod question

Hello,
I am new to this and just start learning this stuff --please help me out
My questions are:
1) When the guide say "A copy of "Super Smash Brothers Brawl", does this means using original game disk or I can use copied version from my USB Hard disk?
2) what are the stage files? I just got a .iso copy haven't use it yet. Does this means I have not gone to stages yet?

3) My Wii version is 4.3U virgin.
I read there are 2 ways to mod it:
a) lower down to 4.1U version first and then mod it
b) Using HackMii directly mod for 4.3U
Which way would works better/safer?
Please advise.
