why is the american government being shut down?

Solution
Because the budget isn't being approved.
No budget = no money, no money = no workers.

Essentially this is coming down to two things:
1). Democrats not cutting 'enough' spending.
2). Republicans tacking on unrelated cuts.

The Republicans don't think the Democrats are cutting enough spending, so they want to remove funding for 'Planned Parenthood' which covers abortions for people who want them but cannot afford them.
Republicans argue that THEIR money shouldn't go to things THEY don't agree with, but if that was the case then nothing would be funded sufficiently.

I personally am siding with the Democrats and hope they stand strong, but I know it will hurt a lot of people.
However, this is VERY hypocritical of Republicans since...

However, this is VERY hypocritical of Republicans since not long ago they were foot-stomping over a bill (I think it was for Veteran's benefits?) because it included an unrelated piece of 'fluff' legislation that would have passed on it's own anyway.
A not-so-funny thing is, none of the people who are arguing have ANYTHING to fear from the government shutdown, they'll still get paid.

@Linkiboy: Not to say I disagree with you, but you should try to be a bit more objective.
@UniqueGeek: This has nothing to do with corruption. Also, one-word answers = bad.

Basically it all boils down to that the worldwide financial system is broken, from the beginning.

i used to go out to the recycling center every couple weeks and look at the crts and other electronics people would drop off. Usually screens were broken or severely scratched from being tossed around. Did find a good one here and there, but never anything like a 1080i widescreen crt.
