Well you see, once upon a time government documents and forms used "sex" in that field, but then too many Karens complained that "sex" is a dirty no-no word and WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN, so forms started using "gender" instead. However, since "gender" is made-up bullshit in the first place, people are free to put whatever they like there.
And now the same Karens are getting triggered again.
